Hi there,

I've been looking around for a new laptop recently. I mainly need it for running Visual Studio but would also prefer it to run a few games as well. Nothing too intensive, CS:GO, Arma 3 maybe?

Anyhow, I don't have any previous experiences with laptops so I came here for some recommendations. I do realise most laptops on OcUK are for gaming but I was also looking for something that's 'value for money' in terms of the hardware. Also, something that has a good battery life as I'll be using it quite a lot at University.

Hi VK,

Massive choice on OCUK, but your requirements are a little vague as you need to think about the size of the screen you would want, also I haven't gamed in a while but im pretty sure Arma is quite intensive so you may need at least a mid-level gaming laptop (Nvidia 860M) minimum?

Pretty sure laptop experts here will be able to help you.

Hi VK

Value for money is very subjective. What kind of budget are you working towards and do you have any preference on screen size ?

Hey,

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking around 15" perhaps as I believe anything below that would be kind of 'too small'? Idk.

Anyway, the budget for this would probably be £1000 (± £200 depending on the spec).

Any recommendations are welcome!

Hi VK

I have checked the minimum specs of Arma III on http://www.game-debate.com/. They have a nifty tool for checking minimum specs etc.

So I have gone with a

i7 -4710HQ
Min 8Gb DDR3 System Memory
Min Nvidia GTX 850M 2Gb GDDR5

As you can see that spec will handle Arma III on recommended

With that in mind you can go for these two models that are within your budget

All will have

Killer LAN
Minimum of two monitors output
Two Year Collect and Return Warranty
Sixty Day Money Back Guarantee if not satisfied.

If your budget can stretch

- 15.6" ultra thin laptop

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-171-MS&groupid=959&catid=1828 £1193

- 17.3"
- Upto 3 External Displays

Hope this helps and by all means drop me or Arjibear a line with any questions

Hi,

Thanks for the very in-depth analysis of what I was looking for. Greatly appreciated!

I do like the sound of this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-174-MS

This is the 15" one I am referring to in the text below: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-173-MS

However, the only issue I have with it is the fact that it's ~17". The other laptop which you sent me (the 15") would be a lot more practical for hauling around at university. The 17" one does however come with an SSD, which the 15" doesn't have.

Is there a way that I can get an SSD into the 15" after purchase or is that physically impossible due to the size?

Hi there,

I will contact GIBBO and find out if OCUK offer this service.

Is there anything you'd be able to recommend that's within the budget?

If you want portability, and also the ability to upgrade the spec yourself, then consider this unit @ £999

Its without O/S, so you can choose to install Win7 or 8, whichever you prefer.

@ Gigabyte we aim to provide end user with the ability to tweak the P35 easily, so the ram, and SSD bays are easily accessed from the base of the unit, and situated on the facing side of the motherboard.

You also have Optical drive on this unit, which again can be removed and swapped for additional HDD or SSD. We provide the bracket to take these FOC with the laptop.

Hope that helps.

Hi VK,

Along the same lines as the P35G recommendation I just posted, if you were to stretch budget to your ceiling on around £1,200, the following unit surpasses your spec requirements, and has SSD already on board, and steps you up to GTX870M graphics (6GB card)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-017-GI

If you look at "P35" in search bar, this will give you all the flavours available, or coming soon, but in the same adaptable chassis.
