DSG didn't when I worked for them over 15 years ago. Doubt it's changed. The retailer wants you to spend the money in their store, not take it somewhere else. On the same principle they'd issue credit notes for discretionary refunds rather than refund on the card or as cash.

If they did they went against DSG policy. I've seen people get a final written warning for doing similar. On a related note ... a colleague got dismissed and prosecuted for taking used credit notes and redeeming them again in a store for a different brand. The systems didn't stop it at the time (as they would have in our chain), but similar to the OP the back office staff caught it shortly afterwards when the numbers didn't add up. He was bang to rights as the stupid idiot used his staff discount!

OP decided to buy presents and claim another discount. Store manager/accounts got wise and pulled him in.
He may have been warned not to discuss the matter in public. Usually, disciplinary hearings can take weeks, especially if HR Human (Remains) Resources are involved.
