Arma 3 Poor FPS :(

So i have been getting rather addicted to Arma 3 online, So much so i upgraded my 2500k and 480 for what in my sig, 970 etc.

Well it made little difference to be honest. I even just upgraded the ram today from 1600mhz stuff to 2666 stuff. again little to no difference. I dont understand how the 970 new mobo new cpu and new ram have made 5-10 fps maximum difference. to say im disappointing is an understatement.

The FPS is a lot better in single player (50-60fps) but online it really seems very low.

I see lots of conflicting guides online about optimizing the game etc. Has any one had any success at this ?

You are not alone, view distance is a killer so keep that to a minimum. Maybe some one else will chime in.

Online performance for arma3 is tied to the server the game is running on,and the amount of players playing on it.

What game mode do you play?

I play a lot of KOTH,and on most servers the Frame rate is extremely variable, talking low 20's-70.On an 80 player server the fps will mostly be in the 30-40 range, but it will be choppy as the server struggles to keep the game world state updated.Their are some servers that have a low player cap/have high spec server ,and the performance is massively better, but its still gonna have substantial difference between min/max frame rates.

I have an almost identical rig yo yours btw, even on the high FPS Koth servers that run 'smoothly' gpu usage is still only around 35%.Cpu use is usually around 60%.

Theres not a lot you can do,its just one of those things you have to accept if you play arma3 Mp modes. a smooth 60 is just not going to happen

I find co-op runs pretty similar to Single player(smooth 60+) when one of your friends is hosting.

What missions are you playing? I don't just mean coop/pvp, I mean the actual names.

Any mission which is against AI will normally have lower than normal FPS, that's never going to change. The main fps killer in missions are the ones that have a load of (badly written) scripts running.

Time to clear up some rumors. The server performance will generally NOT affect your FPS unless the server FPS is tanking below 5. Under that you will definitely see an FPS. Any mission that servers fps go down this low are terribad and should be avoided. I'm talking Altis Life, Wasteland, KotH is pretty bad too.

Currently there is a known issue with servers that have more than 50 players on. FPS drops pretty bad when numbers go above this in some cases.

There has just been an update to the official CHIMERA servers. These run the latest in optimizations (server side) and this latest one is looking pretty good. Lots of users reporting an increase of fps.

Theres not a lot you can do,its just one of those things you have to accept if you play arma3 Mp modes. a smooth 60 is just not going to happen.

Playing DTAS with roughly 40 players and I get 60fps. Good mission with even better scripting.

I will be the first to admit that Arma 3 still needs an awful lot of work for MP.

Thanks guys, i could not tell you off the top of my head the mission names. However in single player is is much much better. The worst performance is around the main base but i cant say i have noticed it anny worse when there are more/less players near me.

What a shame that this is not fixed i really enjoy the game but the fps makes it less than a great experience. I will try some different servers and game modes. The servers that i play on usually have tons of AI (lots of soldiers helicopeters and jets.

Just seems weird that its hardly using the resources avaliable too it. Maybe i need to find a nee game that will impresss me and make me feel my hardware purchase was a worth while investment. Any suggestions ?

they are badly optimized if yu can even call BI games optimized :D

That's a bit unfair, not many games try to do what ARMA does, it's a game asking for so much compared to everything else and it's no wonder why it's not exactly the best running game.

I will say though, they completely dropped the ball in cooperative at 80-100 player counts, have to stick to A2 for that :/

Although, I have an i7 920 which is from what, end of 2008? I'm still rocking 50-60+ fps in adversarial, tied in with a 680 but it's more dependant on cpu.

Some people turn some settings up waaaay too high, having all of the post processing options even at 1 will remove about 2-3 fps each, so you could be losing around 10-12! That and 8x AA actually now has quite a hit and it never used to as much, AA for years in a2 and the early days of a3 made zero difference.

What drivers are you on? - Latest nVidia drivers were absolutely awful in ARMA 3 for me.

Go for 1.5 to 2K View distance and see if that helps?.

What's the CPU clock speed at? The higher the better, you'll see a substantial increase going from i.e. 3.6GHz to 4.2 - 4.5GHz. There's also a bunch of launch parameters that may help, have a quick google and you'll find a good set.

The latest ARMA 3 patch has negatively affected server FPS which will in turn affect client FPS.

It really doesnt depend on the type of mission and server it's being run on.
For example, I only run 1x ARMA 3 mission on my server I was able to get avg 70fps with an i7 3820 4.5GHz + GTX 780 in Ultra at 1920x1080 with 2K View distance [ARMA 3 Epoch] (65/65 players).

.

It runs awful because it was thought that way and never upgraded. They want to do something greater than other "players" in the market do, but using outdated tools in the process. The result speaks for itself.

Just ran A3 using DSR through the Nvidia control panel, set the in game resolution to 4K. Lowered the FSAA etc to standard, ran a benchmark with my cpu at 3.2 and at 4.4. Gave me an extra 13fps average on the OC.

I5 2500K @ 4.4 and a 970 non oc but boosts to 1392 on the core.

The visibility was set to 4000 and object vis was set to 2000. If I fly then the distance gets increased to 8000 and 3000.

Bottom line is, clock your cpu as much as possible, and if you're running at standard res then turn everything up as high as you in the graphics as it will pass the instructions to your GPU rather than the CPU..

Yes I did but in the process of buying a nice new shiny GPU did upgrade to devils canyon and better mobo/faster ram. However I have lost clock speed as I have yet to overclock the new CPU. Hoping the NEW cpu will overclock well and then get some more fps.

Don't forget shortcut commands to get the most out of your hardware and you will always benefit from a good oc with a3. Try not to use stock clocks.

As said, clock your CPU as this game uses CPU grant more than GPU, also as mentioned it is down to servers most of the times such as amount of players on, how long the server is up, amount of objects have been spawned over time.

Though with my graphic settings turned down and my 3770k clocked at 4.7GHz (Need to update my sig) I normally average around 50-60fps.
