The bill came to £25. They gave £10 each, so the waiter was given £30.

he brought back £5 change, they gave him £2, and kept £3. They each got £1 back. So 3 of them have spent £9 each, 3 x 9 is £27 plus £2 is £29.

not quite.

they put in £30 in total

meal came to £25

they gave a tip of £2

so the change remaining is £3

ie: each person spent £9.

the tip is already included in the £9 each (£27 in total) ergo, it does not add up to £29.
it adds up to: £30 = £25 (meal) + £2 (tip) + £3 (change)

Does anyone give change from gift vouchers ? I don't think so...

DSG didn't when I worked for them over 15 years ago. Doubt it's changed. The retailer wants you to spend the money in their store, not take it somewhere else. On the same principle they'd issue credit notes for discretionary refunds rather than refund on the card or as cash.

Just to clarify I don't think there's a missing pound.

There's not.

If I have a bill of £25 and give £30 to a waiter, he gives me £5 change and I give him £2 out of that £5 it leave me with £3.

£2+£3+25 = £30.

My point was that it's possible to work things out or present things in a way which can make no sense.

I have to disagree here, I had a damaged phone and instead of a replacement I received a voucher for £532 from Mastercare which I could use at any DSG store.
I asked the guy in Currys if I could use it on something else and get change and he confirmed it. I bought an ipod, pay as you go phone and put the rest towards a tv.
Phone was an SL45i on a One2One contract which was £13.99 a month and I was placed on the staff tariff which gave me it at half price so £6.99 a month for 12 months and then on top of that I was given a £75 trade in which brought the insurance down from £149 to £74 which covered me for 4 years and which I could transfer on to any other phone I bought from DSG.

Ah good times, think a load of people rinsed Mastercare.

<snip>

If they did they went against DSG policy. I've seen people get a final written warning for doing similar. On a related note ... a colleague got dismissed and prosecuted for taking used credit notes and redeeming them again in a store for a different brand. The systems didn't stop it at the time (as they would have in our chain), but similar to the OP the back office staff caught it shortly afterwards when the numbers didn't add up. He was bang to rights as the stupid idiot used his staff discount!

As for DisasterMasterCare, no comment. :D

Hah! I've not heard that in ages! Disastercare :D

I can't help wondering if it was really like this.

OP asked manager if he could use his discount to buy gift vouchers for family as presents. Manager was unsure so passed it on, it was agreed he could providing they were for presents (meant to be they receiver spends the money) for family.

OP decided to buy presents and claim another discount. Store manager/accounts got wise and pulled him in.

I wonder if they spent the vouchers in the store they worked in all the time?

The manager probably didn't notice anything and auditing "probably" didn't trigger on the double dipping either. If its like most places then they have certain (auditing) trigger conditions on staff discount based on usage patterns (generally amount, frequency and/or billing addresses, etc.) which then triggers a manual investigation and if discrepancies are found forwarded to the local manager to conduct a fact finding interview.

Usually they don't even bother unless its largish amounts (>£2000 in a year) or "big ticket" items being purchased to a different address to the discount holder(s).

This thread is quite possibly the worst of the year.

What purpose does it serve since the OP has just done a runner without updating?!

I've still checked for updates every day... :o

OP should be banned for abandoning thread.

He's been online after the thread was posted, so it's not like he's been caught up with something.

He may have been warned not to discuss the matter in public. Usually, disciplinary hearings can take weeks, especially if HR Human (Remains) Resources are involved.

I vote this thread the most pointless of 2014.

OP posts, 14 pages of arguments and not one word from OP since 1st post.
Glad I scanned through username replies to check if they posted back with answers to all the questions and saved myself 30+ mins of reading.
