AMD : Public Mantle SDK Coming This Year – Nvidia And Intel Can Use It For Free

I am truly and utterly shocked a company that has a history of making open standards and hasn't locked anything off..... continues to do so.

Nvidia guys on here kept banging on about how it wouldn't happen because....... no reason, ignoring history of it, ignoring their GDDR5/4/3, everything else AMD have done(it's a lot). They just wanted it to be not true because Nvidia are outwardly closed to everyone, they insist on pushing locked in things that divide and split game devs. Ubisoft puts gameworks in some games, NOT in others, that means programming and working on multiple different physics engines, fire effects, hair effects, etc. They can't work on one and improve it game to game, they split their work and duplicate work constantly.

Locking in things like api's, physics engines, making stuff closed, hiding source code, pushing partners to use something locked in that they can't and won't use in every game all holds back the industry rather than lets them move forward. It's constant side ways moves which slows down development rather than speed it up.

EDIT:- PS I absolute hate this weird Apple/Nvidia/AMD attempt to run a cult style PR nonsense. Other Mantle talks have been much better, not sure who introduced this talk but he deserved a severe punch in the face. okay watched the start again, it was on mute at the very beginning so didn't realise he was taking the pee.... I still hate most american/tech talks.

It doesn't matter because neither of them will use it, you only have to look at recent benchmarks to see why.

NVidia would probably make Physx etc open for the positive PR it brings if they knew that AMD would completely ignore it.

It doesn't matter because they won't use it... hmm, that isn't what Nvidia guys were saying. They said it WOULDN'T be open, they were certain, they made lengthy and frequent arguments that it would not be open.

it is open, talking around it, making up some new random thing to complain about to try and shift the discussion and pretend you guys were never wrong, lets just say that isn't remotely surprising.

Physx isn't widely used precisely because it isn't open, it hasn't been open. If they made it open it would be used by more devs. Does the industry want a closed physics api, no that is why Havok is massively more widespread than Physx. As yet I've seen precisely no proof physx can do anything other physics api's can't do. The most destructible/interactive game worlds we've seen to date(real games not a **** tech demo like that multiplayer game no one ever played) are all Havok....

Physx is crap like in Borderlands if you randomly decide to shoot lots of bullets at a wall for ages, you can see lots of shells. I mean I've literally not once done that in a couple of playthroughs in each game, but you can do it, most of the world isn't interactive and almost nothing is destructible but physx, woo.

It does sound like it will massively help Crossfire in future, they've hinted that in future Mantle will be able to use the Ram independently so 4GB x2 will become 8GB usable.

It's simple marketing, create a product, give it away until it becomes industry standard and then charge for it. Intel and Nvidia won't touch it with a barge pole simply because they weren't born yesterday.

Mantle Licence Free, so even if Nvidia used it that would NOT after even name AMD once.. They can still continue as normal.

OPEN standards we all Win and get great PC performance.

Why would you dis that?

Perhaps he is alluding to a trojan horse tactic. Give it away free and then pay for incremental updates and refinements further down the road once its more established.

Personally I've no idea what strategy is being used.

Hmmmm

Name other software that applies to? Because I literally cannot think of anything.

Not quite the same but plenty of companies used the freemium model (before it had a name) to gain dominance. Adobe for one. They actually made money by charging for the authoring software, pro features and support though, not the base product.

I'm currently using windows 7 and 8.1 modded without the retard tablet interface. One concern is that I would have to be forced into a newer microsoft Os that I don't like, just for future games that use the next direct x. Mantle therefore could allow me to use windows 7/8 but I have concerns that Mantle won't able to cover all the game titles, just selective ones ?

Also why was there no mention about linux? So I can rid myself of the windows all together?

Nope, people were saying that it is very unlikely nvidia or even intel would bother with mantle while AMD are the sole arbitors, Amd giving access does not make it open, Directx is proprietary to MS, allowing use of something licence free does not actually make it open, Unless amd hand off control to a third party, mantle isnt open
