Hi,

Started getting an annoying pop up in windows all the time - stating "Power surge on hub port" and that "a USB device has exceeded the power limits of the port".

Clicking on the message shows a list of ports and an unknown device on a USB3 connection.

Thing is I currently have very little plugged into USB, with only keyboard and mouse plugged into the rear USB 2 ports so they can be used on boot up.

As far as I can tell the USB3 hubs would be the motherboard header ports, which I have nothing connected. The only USB3 header I did have installed was the front panel connectors - but have unplugged them with no effect.

I have nothing else to remove from USB - does this sound like my motherboard is faulty? The message pop up is very annoying and won't go away, regardless of which options I choose from the window above.

Checked in bios and I can't see an option to disable USB3 ports, just USB2?

This has reappeared oddly - had it a couple of times a while back. A reboot didn't clear it, but if I to a full power cycle it goes away.

Yesterday on loading windows I got a windows error message along the lines of "unable to locate driver". Checked in Dev manager and there again was an "unknown device" under USB.

Unplugged everything from USB connections but it remained.

A full power down and reboot cured it again. Odd.

On latest bios too. Trying to determine whether this is an intermittent hardware fault (on one usb port within the board?) or a firmware/driver glitch.

Have you ever tried updating the BIOS? if not, try it.

As I mentioned above - "On latest bios too". :D I have updated it a few times since originally buying the board.

I've been studying the manual and the board diagram/schematics listed, and appears there are two via USB 3 hubs on the board fed by the intel chipset, so could be one of those playing up. May see if there is an option to disable those, or if there is any firmware of specific drivers needed. Don't suspect it's drivers since needs a cold boot to sort when issue occurs, which is pretty intermittent.

Thanks, I'll give that a try on the alternate bios. :)

Quite a large version difference on most of those - I guess gigabyte just haven't been maintaining the bios for this board? :(

idk why,a lot of fixes are still in the beta bios, they should make it to final but seems to take a while

im using beta myself just fine

They had 12e in beta for ages on their downloads but now actually have it listed as a "normal" 12 now. It's the one I'm using too.

Updated to the patched bios (well, its F12j dated 22/7/2013 compared to F12 dated 15/05/2014 downloaded off the support site) and will see how it goes.

I have spotted some interesting new options in the bios like an option to disable individual USB ports. If problem reoccurs may see if I can just disable it through this option. :)
