Looks like a fantastic argument for not buying a shed. He did all that work to it and after allowing for the cost of the work ended up spending less than a grand less than he would have done had he just bought a really nice one in the first place.

So there we go, proof that it's a waste of time fishing at the bottom of the pond :p
 
If you like tinkering with stuff and doing it for the joy and to bring an E46 back to life, but I wouldnt say its a massive profit for the effort.
 
So he said it took several months…lets say 4 months.

He mainly worked on it at weekends, so thats 8 weekends over 4 months; 16 days..

He made $1600 profit for 16 days work which equates to $100 a day. I'd rather just buy one in good condition than work every weekend for 4 months for £60 a day :p

Completely different if you enjoy the restoration side of things, but he makes it sound like he's just made $1600 for hardly doing anything.

Standard misleading title to catch peoples attention and go viral.
 
Was an enjoyable read, shows what you can do with a bit of TLC. He obviously enjoys the restoration side of things, so the profit/margin wasn't really what he was aiming for. He took a gamble buying the thing in the first place.

It sounds like he thoroughly enjoyed restoring it so perhaps that was worth more to him than the actual money side of things.
 
Made more than that on a car without even touching it :D

Great writeup though and always interesting to see.

Always something you can try yourself as well, provided you can stomach losing everything if worst comes to worst.

I would actually love to do up an older BMW, however I only I would say have the base skills, I would be ok with things like replacing panels, fixing some interior consoles, panels, things like cleaning inside out, replacing things like springs, brake pads, disks, I would need more knowledge of engine cleaning/restoration.

I would also prefer garage space rather than outside and have the time

Maybe one day
 
Much prefer the e39 M5 effort and that seemed more worth his while to do.

Still, I'm not sure if I would want such neglected in the first place cars no matter how tidied up they end up.

What a clueless statement. Obviously someone who knows very little about their M3 history, the E46 was only the second 6 cylinder M3 (after the E36). There was mass outrage when they decided to put a 6 pot in the E36!

I gave up reading the article at that point.
