Insurance price. Where do you personally draw the line?

My insurance has always been relatively cheap since I got my first car about 8 years ago. However I had a crash last December (blame is still being disputed) and my premium took a bit of a hit.

I currently pay about £550 PA for a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI.

This is pretty acceptable but Im currently having a bit of a midlife crisis and want to buy a Megane RS250.
The problem this gives me is that the insurance quotes are around £1k on comparison sites.

That would be the most I would personally ever consider spending.

What is your upper limit? The point in which you think "Is it worth it?"

Nothing i ever seem to quote on is ever that expensive, although obviously expensive is relative.

For example i think the insurance element for my 500HP Merc is around £350-400. Much more and i am not sure that i would consider it great value.

Insurance for "normal" cars, such as (for example) a 2.2 Auto Vectra which we have is around £200, thats around where i feel a normal car should be and i would be slightly miffed at paying much more.

I wouldn't want to pay more than about 400 quid at the most

That was my previous bill before my smash last December. It jumped up £150+ as soon as my no claims went down the pan :(

It might improve again when they finally decide the blame on my accident. My insurance take my side and are trying to recoup costs and remove any blame from me but its dragging out.

For a powerful car I'd be perfectly happy to pay £1000, but I'd be unwilling to pay much more. I currently pay £1400 for insurance on both of my cars, which I think is pretty fair.

I'm 20, no points, no fault claims, and one non-fault claim from around 3 years ago so although I'm probably not in the highest risk category, I'd certainly be perceived to be more of a risk than most drivers, particularly as both my cars are RWD and faster than average.

I'm hoping to sell both my cars and buy an XJR or CL600 when I'm 21, and the dummy quotes I've run predict that my insurance should be around £600 by then.

I haven't seen anything like that level of increase having had a FIREBALLING CRASH, mine increased by a few pounds only and that's on the type r which should be more of a risk than a diesel Mondeo.

I can't really stomach more than £600 unless its for something particularly special - but I have never really come across anything I'd want to buy that goes much over that threshold anyway.

I usually try to take tax into account too - if I'm buying something more than £300 a year to tax I like to keep the total within about £800 if I can

To give you a comparison, I've just run a quote (been looking at some anyway) and the cheapest I find for an r26 is £420 - £100 excess, 30, 3 years ncb and no points. A modified wrx is £550

seems expensive for a car??

im glad I ride a bike,my stomach churns at anything over £150 a year (my smug face:D)

I've just paid £400 for the 640d which includes business use, legal cover, protected NCB etc didn't seem to bad considering the list price of the car.

Just got mine with Swinton, fully comp, £250 excess, 11 years ncb for £129 for the year. I set a target of £150 max this year. I'm a tight git!! :D

It's a long time since I paid much more than about £250. If I had a quote over £300 I'd probably wince unless it was a car that I knew was going to be pricey.
