Hello people.

I just bought myself the new borderlands and started to play but once the gameplay started I could hear a fairly loud-ish whine coming from the PC, obviously from the GPU.

In borderlands the pre sequel i was getting between 120-200 fps constantly and the whine is definitely there but whenever I play BF3/BF4 i also get 100fps+ and there is no noise whatsoever, not mentioning about league of legends with 400fps and still no whine.

So what do you guys think? will the gpu be affected in any way or is just the whine, doing nothing but being annoying.

from what I have read I think the whine depends on how much GPU intensive the game is so on games that don't put too much strain on the GPU it will be fine but on more demanding games you can get it.

I don't think it does any damage to the GPU but it can be annoying when playing games and you can hear the whine.

your options are to RMA the card or put up with it, I have also read it can be down to the PSU if its not powerful enough

Think your PSU is fine. I have a G1 and can't really say I've heard it whine (yet) but I haven't really played on it much.

I'm no expert but im sure it is when fps gets high so v-sync will stop the whine.

Vsync stops it on a 60hz monitor normally, but if hes using a 120 or 144 i dont think it will make a difference.

iv had 2 970 G1's with coil whine and i RMA'ed them both back....i'm not going to bother with 970's anymore now!!!

personally i couldn't deal with the whine :( .

Whine shouldn't exist as it is poor card design and components...end of... there is a limit being geek guys!

I personally had a G1 and returned it because was noisy but at least it wasn't whiny but "buzzing" (which is still unacceptable).

If I were you I would invest in the OC 970!

first thing im going to do now when I get a 970 is stick it through 3D mark to make sure I get no coil whine on mine as I don't want to be paying out this much money on a card that is going to do that

Well, the thing is that i do not get any whine in any other game besides borderlands , not even in 3D mark. It's also not a loud whine so i don't really mind it that much.

Reason why I posted this was because you guys might know how to fix it since even if i turn on v-sync it will still be hearable

Maybe check the fan itself to see if any debris is in there? While it's not happening in other games it maybe because Borderlands pushes it just that much harder then the others making it work faster?

Just a thought really

Even stranger now, I opened borderlands again and there is no coil whine , at all :| I also capped it at 72 fps with V-sync on so it might have been because of the high fps.
