Hi, I am looking to change my motherboard to one with better slot spacing for xfire.
Is there a big difference in performance between the two ?
I have a 4770k running in a gigabyte sniper z87 at the moment.

If you have no plan for updating to upcoming broadwell or using M.2 & sata express then there is no difference between Z87 and Z97. Personally, if purchasing new, I would go for Z97 motherboard since they have very close price range. A decent Z97 £100 can serve you well.
My suggestion: Asus Z97 AR. Fantastic bios, excellent bios fan control and good 3-4 pin fan headers position.

Again thanks, however that mb has the same pcie spacing as the board I have now.

Looking at boards with the same spacing as :-

Z97 for the simple fact its newer plus more native sata 3 ports

Both have 6 Intel Native Intel 6Gbit/s ports AFAIR, less on Z97 if they use 2 for SATA Express but if you do not use this option you can have those 2 ports back so total of 6 like Z87.

How many graphics cards will you run with the board?

2, my top card runs @15 degrees hotter with 1 slot spacing in my current board.

With the other board layout I would have 2 slot spacing which is the same as the bottom card in my existing setup.

Here is some motherboards that have the same PCIe layout as your suggestion:

Z97 from OverclockersUK:
1. Gigabyte Z97X-SOC £140
2. Asrock Z97 OC Formula £170
3. Gigabyte Z97X-SOC Force £170
4. Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming GT £190
5. Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming G1 £245
6. Asus Z97-WS £255
7. Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming G1-Wifi BK £350

Z87 from OverclockersUK:
1. EVGA Z87 FTW £188
2. Gigabyte Z87X-OC Force £200
