*** The Official OcUK Weight Loss Thread ***

I'm not massively convinced of the science but the theory goes that you ingest carbs that you don't necessarily require late in the evening, they are converted into fat rather than burned off.

It's anecdotal, but if I eat late I tend not to have lost anything in the morning.

Good because it's complete crap.
As long as you don't exceed your calorie allowance you can eat what you like whenever you like and you won't put on fat (this is massively simplified due to the way the body deals with different foods and your hormonal response but the basics are solid).

The reason you haven't lost anything in the morning is because your body still has the food in your digestive tract. Not because you've eaten carbs after 6 and you've put fat on.

This. Your circadian rhythm dips in the evening and everything slows down.

Okay cool, it's just that science does not backup that claim :)

Carbs or calories don't miraculously turn to fat overnight if you eat at certain times.

There is a whole hormonal profile to take into consideration, metabolic rates, how much lean muscle mass you have, and your activity, health and overall physiological state to take into consideration.

Carbs and other nutrients do affect your metabolism and the way your body works, but it takes a lot of work to get it to a stage where it is that finely tuned that carb timing has an effect.

Age: 24
Height: 6'2"
Weight: ~16st 2lbs

I went on a 'Diet' back in august. I weighed a fair bit over 18st. All i've done is change what i eat and its amazing.

I used to have Slice sausage rolls pretty much every morning for breakfast- Now its Special K.

Lunch - I used to have Chinese or a burger from the van, Now its lentil soup.

Dinner is boring, I usually just have grilled chicken salad, Baked potato with tuna, Vegetable stirfry etc. I used to go through 3-4 Takeaways a week and now i limit myself to one.

Im trying to walk more aswell and i actually quite enjoy it.

i was 16 stone last Sept now i am 13 stone 3lbs currently at 32 years of age and 186cm(nearly 6 ft 2)..the main things i did were:

- Eat consistantly, 4 times a day every 3h or so.
- Drank 3-4 litres of water a day.
- Consumed high amounts of daily protein, usually around 200g a day.(only due to doing weightlifting otherwise 100g or so is more than fine)
- Cut out sugar as much as i could.
- Had vegetables more often in meals.
- Walked a few times a week for an hour or so each time.
- Did weightlifting 4-5 times a week.(you can just do bodyweight exercises if you do not like going to the gym.)

I am no expert or anything just saying what worked for me, goodluck to the people trying....now is the best time of the year to lose weight/fat.

I think you're right about the time of year - staying cold actually forces your body to use more calories/fat I believe to stay warm(er).

The downside is that you lose fat, but losing a bit of muscle is inevitable. I'm just mindful that in my quest to get totally ripped (ok, toned), my last mission of getting visible abs will drop my BF% and physique to a point of looking emaciated unless i'm pumped after a gym session.

IMO the reason cutting out bread and fruit juice on a diet is not some faddy reason but because a glass of juice or two slices of bread are quite dense in calories but not particularly satiating. If you're trying to stick to a lower calorie intake, I'd rather have a 2 egg omelette than a glass of juice, or a chicken breast with loads of greens instead of 2 slices of bread.

Me and the Mrs started doing the 5.2 diet about this time last year. So far I've lost 2 1/2 stone and the Mrs 1 1/2 stone. Been slow going cos I like my beer although I don't drink as much as I used to. I use the gym at work and do spinning sessions now and again. I'd like to lose another 10 lbs before I go on holiday in January but I don't think I'll meet that goal with party season coming up! An illness has also re-surfaced which makes it even harder for me to stick to the 5.2 but we plod along.

im no expert. but instead of just eating differently. do an exercise increase as well. also, lift some weights or body weight exercises. this isn't a , do you even lift braaaa. muscle increases your rest burn rate. you burn more calories doing nothing, win win, plus you end up feeling better

I lost around 2st over the summer and went from a 36in waist down to 30in and now fit into trousers I had in the 90s. It was a lifestyle change rather than an overnight fad...

I started walking 4 hours per night but after a month I swapped to weights every other night. Any exercise is good but building muscle is generally better than cardio because muscle will burn calories even at rest.

I also dropped my calorie intake to just a little below what I needed. Read what is in your food. Look on sandwiches for example and understand which are high in protein but low in calories. Chicken and fish are great. I try to eat unprocessed foods and have have a good mix of high protein meats/fish, vegetables, rice, grains such as oats and some fruit.

Lifting weights and eating more protein, even if you don't want to build muscle, will prevent muscle loss when dieting.

Also... Fage 0% greek yoghurt :D

Don't crash diet as it is counter productive. I also drastically reduced my bread and alcohol consumption. I still eat them occasionally but now much less.

I agree with weights/protein to preserve muscle but I feel people exaggerate how many calories muscle needs to simply exist.

Given how much faster it is to lose fat than gain muscle you should be on a downward bmr trend as fat, while using a fraction as many calories pound for pound as muscle, still uses it's share.

It's way to easy to persuade yourself you've 'earned' some percieved treat when in reality you've done virtually nothing, calories wise. Health and wellbeing is a whole other story of course.

Got my fitbit and wifi scales :P apparently I'm actually 96.6kg and have 25.3% body fat, which is nice. Lets see if we can get some of this off then.

Snap!

So I actually got some starting stats:

Weight: 88KG
Waist: 40" (Not actually a waist measurement but belly at widest point which is what I'm concentrating on)
BMI: 29.4

Going to just spend the next two weeks logging meals and exercise and get a benchmark of what I actually eat and do.

Anyone know of any decent sites that will calculate the nutritional content of recipes? I have some recipes that are my own creation and I want to know what the calorie count is.

Unsure on sites, but you can go the whole weighing ingredients and putting them in to a custom recipe on my fitnesspal. I've done that on a few.

Oh and Burnsy, the % fat is different to BMI as % takes in to account the lean mass vs fat.
