Big Swing in Market Share From AMD to NVIDIA: JPR

If I was using a great clocked 780 6gb, 780ti, or Titan then I'd just say no thankyou to the 970/980 come back when you're bigger . The maxwell v2 maybe more efficient with 800 shaders less than gk110/ may provide better performance in situations, but effectively all it is just a cheaper way for Nvidia to make profit selling a product to replace the big die expensive gk110.
If we ever see a 2560 or 2816 maxwell v3 on 28nm then we'll see it once Amd have made their next move. All the time Amd have nothing to counter with, Nvidia are making a killing on their 970/980s, fair play.
Why do some people struggle to see maxwell v2 for what it is?
The 970 is the 4870 of today, cracking card.

I wanna see I third manufacturer enter the market, someone like Samsung

Would be awesome if third player could come in and shake up the market, stop Nvidia's choke hold lol.

+1 Nvidia have been and still are one step ahead of each AMD move. If AMD can get a die shrink and HBM into their new products before Nvidia, it would be a tangible reason to buy AMD over Nvidia. Then AMD could get good sales and would deserve them.

Worth mentioning I've prob bought more AMD cards than those who come across as fan boys defending them combined :p

I've got an 8GB MSI 290X on order to try for myself..

I don't think AMD make bad cards, Nvidia are just a step ahead in performance / power consumption / features / advertising atm. AMD need to step up to match them.

If it was as simple as just releasing a good product then AMD would not be in the situation they are. The 7970 was and still is superior to the gtx680 yet the gtx680 sold more.

Nvidia have a brand advantage end of story. Look at Fermi with all it's release downfall's. It still done pretty good. Had AMD released Fermi it would have been a disaster.

The 7970 wasnt a better product launch though, not for the first 6months+ while AMD sorted their drivers out, and it launched at a price above the 580 3GB, which itself was stupidly over priced, the 680 on launch was competition for and cheaper than the 7970. Rather than fix the problem, AMD slashed prices, which never sends a good signal as it just says "we know we're not as good but look how cheap we are", which is exactly what they've done now. They are self perpetuating the impression that they have to be cheaper because they arent as good.

"Good products sell, it's that simple. Good products with good advertising sell even better"

It isn't quite as simple as that....

Very true you only after look how most people think Iphone and only iphone is the best... Not knowing they is much better out there on the Android side.

Iphone sell because there Marketing is spot on... Nvidia most people have in there head there better because it cost more must be better right? Or the Drivers they hear so much Bull crap about AMD drivers that Nvidia are problem free!

These are the average customer, its the guys like most us on here who really know the main benefits from choosing Nvidia or AMD.

Already said ^^

If AMD delivered on product and on advertising they would sell better.

Can't attack Nvidia for having better products / advertising it is ridiculous.

AMD will likely come back strong with next GPU launch and shift more units. There's no conspiracy or mystery involved.

Yes but you don't seem to realise that even relatively poor products (not saying nvidia GPU's are poor) can still sell millions more than the the better products by rival companies and the sole reason is because of superior marketing/advertising, case in point; the HTC one m8/m7 and the galaxy s4/s5, the HTC phones despite being MUCH preferred by the majority of reviewers and end users who frequent forums like this sold nowhere as many galaxy devices world wide, why might that be now........

- HTC don't have the brand power, Samsung are far better known, which is to be expected since Samsung do everything and HTC only sell phones/tablets
- Samsung know how to separate themselves from the likes of HTC, same way apple do, by having separate stands purely dedicated to their phones. Know all those times you go into CPW and see Samsung and apple devices right at the entrance/exit where as the phones by the likes of htc, alcatel etc. are shoved together at the back of the store, well that is because Samsung etc. go in store and tell them to do that
- Want to know why the people in phone shops always try to sell the Samsung/apple devices, well that is because they get more sales commission and/or other bonuses for selling them
- Everywhere you go, what do you see on side of buses, buildings, even in the newspapers and on TV, ads for Samsung galaxy devices, how many do you see for HTC phones???

Also, I am not attacking nvidia at all, I am simply pointing out that you're wrong about generalising marketing, good products and success as "simple as that".

Plz remove fanboy / tin foil hats before posting.

Right back at you + don't post till you know more about marketing & advertising

Rubbish tbh. A step ahead now and then maybe but always give us a break. 7970 v gtx680 says otherwise. Why anyone with your knowledge would buy a 290x 8gb on it's own is daft. You know full well to see the benefits over a standard 4gb you need at least 2 or 3 and to be pushing the 4gb Vram.

Exactly.

Reminds me of a guy on avforums who thinks the more expensive the TV, the better it is :o

As above, you are forgetting that the 7970 was not actually better than the 680 at launch because of drivers, and the 680 was cheaper

Indeed and i remember when i was looking to build my first PC and everyone around me was telling me to a get a P4, but i always do my homework and found out that the Athlon was better at the time, but the P4 sold more for reasons that you have covered and also others which most of us are already aware of.

Lol i actually bought a Dell that had a p4 with a 9800 non pro. Loved it but that was before i actually started to learn about PC's. I just threw some money at it to the sum of £1400. Was a decent sum back then but in this day and age is barely a few Gpu's if you go Nvidia.

Nvidia came later so knew what clocks to hit to gain the performance crown. It was always plainly obvious to me which was a better card.

But that is exactly the reason why nvidia are perceived to be the better purchase. A product isnt just about theoretically which should be better, it is the sum of the hardware, software and marketting. Launch reviews will live to haunt your product long after it is "fixed"

still after all these years people get this wrong.

1. The 7970/50 on release were underclocked far below their max potential, especially 7950, whilst kepler used adaptive boost clocks.
2. Bf3 was a game in particular that before the wonder drivers even overclocking the 7950/70 couldn't keep up with the 670/680.
3. A 1ghz bios and 1500 ram was provided by Amd months after Tahiti launch,
4. A whole year later after tahiti launch the wonder drivers were released.

5. The clocking potential and drivers together provided better performance than the 680 in the end, but it was almost a year too late, Amd should have launched with a more refined setup.

Lol a year. The gtx680 was released in March and the wonder drivers came out in September. Also the Ghz 7970 was released in June with things pretty much being even between the camps. Talk about getting it wrong lol.

1. 7970/50 release date Jan 2012 , Official boost editions 7970 June 2012/ 7950 August 2012.
2. Gtx 680 release date March 22, 2012

Wonder drivers were cat 12.11, ok not a year but almost.

(there was a bios update official from amd before they made reference boost editions products)

So 3 months before the 7970 equalled the gtx680 in performance and the beta drivers were around September. I could be wrong about the drivers but i am pretty sure amd had started releasing Beta's instead of there monthly whql. I think 12.11 was a whql of an earlier beta in September.
