Just after some advice on upgrading my CPU from the 6300. It will be mainly for gaming, BF4 etc.

I have this - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-116-OE but with the K2 mountdoom cooler, and a corsair hx 750w PSU.
I have been looking at the 8350, 8370 and 9590 and would just like some advice what to go for. The only overclocking i'll be doing is with the OCUK profile built into my previous build I would imagine.

Thanks.

Id drop in an 8350 and overclock it yourself. Seriously cheap now and for bf4 etc it does really well with a bit of an overclock.

I don't think the OcUK profile will be valid for a different chip as they all clock differently and the 8350 has 2 extra cores meaning different power and voltage reqirements.

The alternative would be to change completely over to an intel setup but that would be significantly more expensive! Id stick with what you've got and get an 8350 if you want a small improvement

As much as i'd love to do a complete rebuild, it would be frowned upon by my better half ;) I'm happy to be able swap out my 7950 for a 290, and upgrade my CPU, don't want to push my luck!
Thats a good point about the OCUK profile, I hadn't thought about that tbh, im happy to have a little dabble into manual overclocking though.

Appreciate the reply.

Manual overclocking with these chips is great fun! Really easy to do and its great seeing cinebench results going up in front of your eyes :D

8350 + 290 is a great setup, chews through BF4 with ease!

8320e all the way! Newer revision of the chip and easier to over clock. If you're not interested in learning how to though, then the 9590 is basically a preoverclocked 8350.

I wouldnt bother swapping out the CPU from your Fx6300,if its as shown in the link to be at 4.4ghz.

Going to say even a 9370 or 9690 wont give you very much improvement for at all in gaming for the cost involved (£150+)

Just push the Oc on your Fx6300 further

no point.

i had a 6300 & 8320 before and in 90% of games you will not see any difference at all.

maybe 5 / 10 % fps gains.

better gpu will give you more power than a cpu upgrade.

Only cpu that would give a significant upgrade would be an i5, i7 or Xeon.

I upgraded from a [email protected] to a 4790k and feel it was a waste of time tbh.

For most things it is, but it definitely helps with fps minimums I've found.

AMD cpus are good enough most of the time, and the 83xx series is great for the price.

No offence but it was. I run three rigs here. 8320 @ 4.7ghz + 7990, 8c16t xeon @ 2ghz + R290 and 3970x @ 4.9ghz with Titan Black SLI and the only difference I see is that the Titan Black rig can handle higher game settings.

And that's only down to GPU power. The 2ghz xeon more than does the job.

I wish people would understand this. Games now don't even want CPU power.

OP. As I stated, I run a 8320 @ 4.7ghz and it's more than enough. I would try and get a 8320 for around £100 and overclock it. Your board is more than up to it, just know you need to cool the VRMs. This is easy though.

I agree any half decent cpu will do for gaming. Tbh i wouldn't change the 6300 for now just overclock it there a great cpu and offer great bang for buck.

Appreciate everyones replies, lots of food for thought.
I have held off the CPU purchase for now, although my MSI 290 arrives this morning and I will see how that gets on before deciding to go ahead with the CPU upgrade.
I am in the position to upgrade though, and the 8350 seems to be getting the majority of nods, but if it is a case of upgrading purely for upgradings sake, then I will hold off, or maybe buy a SSD instead.

SSD would definitely be worth it, you'll notice more real world performance out of that than the 83xx. But for bf4, the extra 2 cores are worth it

IMO the 6300 with a 290 is a decent match. You will want more cores for Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, Metro LL and so on though.

The very heavy games do seem to drain the CPU quite hard. I went from a I5 2400 (well, a Xeon you've probably never heard of) to a 8320 @4.2ghz and my min FPS doubled.

I ran a 290 and 6300fx without any problems as i said the only diffrence a saw was my benchmark scores but playing games they look the same to me.

I say this with the greatest of respect to the AMD people, but it makes little sense to get an AMD processor in a gaming rig. The extra 20 quid for a base 4000 series i5 is worth it for boot times and random apps that use the CPU power alone. Once you plug minimum frame rates into the equation, yes absolutely you want the extra CPU power. e.g:

If you overclock the 6300, or an 8320e it'll still do surprisingly well; there are some games where it will make little difference, but an upgrade is well warranted, grab a cheap i5 IMHO.

But he would have to get a new motherboard etc as well, pushing costs up further.

I agree, intel with greater IPC is definitely the way to go if you want a new setup, but if you've already got a great board and wants a quick upgrade, then its a no brainer for me.

And they're fun to OC :D
