I'm going to see this tomorrow.

http://bytbil.com/bilar/bmw/550/jvycw5sg/A0QBUDIAAYkG3uQA4AA_!

I know it ain't going to be cheap to run, but I wonder if I'm in the right ball park?

The commute will be roughly 70 miles so lets say averaging 500 miles per week.

I am going to estimate that I wont be getting much more than 15 mpg.

Tax wont be high round here its about 300 per year for this car.

Insurance probably around 800 - 1200 per year.

Petrol is the same price as UK, so I'm thinking running costs of around around 800 quid per month would pretty much do it? Am I vastly under/over estimating?

Unless your commute is all urban driving I'd have thought you'd be able to get a bit more than 15MPG.

I would say most of it will be motorway but I'm planning for the worst costs. If I was getting the stated 25ish combined that would be awesome and reduce my petrol costs by 40 percent of course. :)

The car has a 1 year mechanical guarantee, speaking of which how pricey are 550's when they go wrong?

I'm a complete novice and haven't had a car since I sold my N reg Toyota corolla 1.4 back in 2009!

I also am keenly aware of how bad the resale of these things can be due to petrol prices etc, so I will be going in there with a borderline offensively low cash offer to see what they say.

That's a pretty big distance for such an uneconomical car.

Shouldn't be any more expensive than a 530i to repair nowadays. Is it worth getting over a 530i which could get you 30mpg on a run reasonably happily (for someone else to answer, Fox!)

Mate had one and the vacuum assist on brakes went do to a split pipe..... Oki pipe wasn't too bad price wise...... but it was a joke to replace! Like a 4 man weekend job! Also has 6 separate Engine ECU's, weird! His was a lot older then this one tho!

The reason I'm looking at the 550i instead is because they are a bargain due to running costs. So in theory I could enjoy a tasty v8 with my savings.

Why would you want that example?

Fake M5 badges and M5 side grilles, bizarre light up BMW logo projected onto the ground, etc etc.

Find a nicer one.

Plus why would you want to spend £800 a MONTH running a 10 year old E60? It's simply not a good enough car to justify such enormous levels of expenditure.

Except they are usually not - they are sufficiently rare that the rarity value cancels out the lower demand. They generally cost more than the equivilent 530i.

I had the same idea when I got my F10 - why not pick up a 550i. But they were 50% more expensive for similar age/mileage cars..

25 may be a tad optimistic, but 20 certainly would be easily achievable. Running cost wise I can't see it being any worse than any other car in it's class, and most of the parts would be the same for any E60 anyway.

However, I think you'd have to be a real petrolhead to consider a 550i over something more economical with the kind of mileage you're doing. People think I'm nuts doing 20-30k per year in my car, which is still probably more economical than a 550i.

What would you get instead? not loaded question but I'm thinking to meet same req at the same outlay.

I've no idea what I would get for the same outlay as this thread is another in a common theme thats developing lately - non UK based used cars.

This is OcUK - whilst its great we get people from all over the world posting here it's really not the place to ask what used car to buy in non UK markets. Almost none of us will have a clue what the used market is like outside the UK and what the best buys might be as a result.

That car for example is £13k, a hilarious amount of money for a car like that. It wouldn't be that much here. Local markets are so different...

If I had £13k and I wanted a 5 Series I'd probably buy an LCI 530i but I've no idea what they cost where you live so I've no idea how useful a comment that is. I think I'd pick an E Class over a 5 Series of this age though.

If I went to get in somes car and the logo was projected on to the floor like that I would burst out laughing at them. The most barry of all mods I've seen.

I wouldn't. It's an early E60 with 5 owners and 160,000km on the clock (which actually isn't all that much)
Imported into Sweden June 2013 and it's got some rather questionable mods.
The price has already been dropped so you can see that selling it on is going to be a major ballache.

I've had a quick google and it seems that the pre-LCI (ie. this one) 550is had a lot of issues. Not a good sign.
You openly admit that your last car was a Toyota Corolla and you don't know much about cars, so I'm not sure that a 5 Series V8 with a lot to go wrong is really a sensible purchase..

I don't think insurance will be too much of an issue, but perhaps run some quotes before you buy just to make sure!

Either way go in with your eyes wide open otherwise you'll be like, "OMG POWAAAA" and fall in love with it.

LOL the projected logos would have to go! :D

I know its silly money compared to the UK but if I do go for it I will only offer around 9 grand. Also I am moving from denmark where this car would be closer to 40 grand no joke.

my brother has a 650i which afaik is pretty much the same basic car, he averages 24mpg and isn't light on the throttle

Thanks I didn't spot that, or the import thing. I'm glad I asked on here.

^^ That web site is immensely useful. It tells you just about everything you need to know regarding the vehicle's history. Outstanding finance, etc.
Not sure about previous accident damage though.

I appreciate that you've just left Denmark, but do remember that Sweden is by no means a cheap place to live. Any sort of maintenance will be charged at around £100/hour.
I paid £85 for a bloody aircon 'service' (regas) while I was in Sweden over the summer.
