8 year old tyres - would you fit them?

Might not pass MOT if it's knackered and they actually bother to check it. They actually told us it was unsafe and needed replacing.

The MOT does not concern itself with the presence or condition of the spare tyre :) Neither with the age of the running tyres, only condition.

That is quite true. I may have it mixed up as we got that car serviced and MOT'd at the same time. The MOT people may well have pointed out the spare is knackered as a courtesy (which is what I think ours did).

If we had any reason to fit it, not only would it have been dangerous, I think it might have been considered "not fit" and therefore breach of insurance and an offence, etc. Certainly if you're ever in a car accident, the first thing insurance people will do is check your tyres to see if they can apportion you some of the blame. They even did that to my sister's car when it was hit, even though it was parked and she wasn't even in the car!

Not in a month of Sundays. I drove something with nine-year-old tyres on it recently, it was all over the place! They'd gone very hard and offered little in the way of grip or traction.

I towed a trailer that I borrowed with tyres that were about 8 years old to get an engine from Rotherham to Worksop a couple of years ago.

Luckily none of the rubber flying off the tyre when it disintegrated at 55MPH hit anyone else's car & my payload of V6 engine didn't depart the trailer either, was a massive pain though having to get it recovered from the hard shoulder of the M1.

Never again!
