Cancelling a tenancy agreement early on?

Hi all,

so we just moved house this weekend as our neighbors were a nightmare for the past few years, you know the kind who get together and gossip and think they are living on coronation street or something  Well aside from that the neighbors on both sides were loud (slamming doors and cupboards, banging on walls etc during all hours of the night and weekends).

Anyway so having just moved again to get away from that rubbish, we went private rent again and I believe 6 months minimum tenancy, the new neighbors we have aquired are even worse then the last ones. Running up and downstairs like elephants, slamming house and car doors as early as 6.30am, TVs and speakers loud too can be heard through the walls etc.

Long story short its a nightmare, moving from one bad nightmare into another hell

Is there such a thing as a cooling off period/right to cancel the tenancy agreement? It was through Robinsons we did it and we both have spoke to the landlady about the issues.

Would appreciate any advice if there is a way of cancelling the agreement or even just staying for the initial month and a half we payed upfront?

Thanks :)

PS, only been here 4 days!

I sympathise with the OP, lady above me who has just moved in walks around in high heels (at least that's what it sounds like) at all sorts of hours (midnight) and makes an absolute racket. Not the kind of dull noise, i'm talking seriously loud like she's in the room you're in.

This is a well built apartment building as well. I'm actually moving out because of it, hard to handle that kind of noise.

There's noise from people living, and then there's inconsiderate noise at silly hours of the day, that can easily be avoided. It's noise like that which is hard to take.

6.30am is early for car doors?

Depends, too early for the inconsiderate way some people slam them but you have to expect some people leaving for work around that time.

I've got 3-4 neighbours who leave most days about that time and most of them manage it with very little noise but one can't :S

To an extent noise from neighbours in general is something you have to put up with but also no reason why people can't be a bit considerate also.

suck it up.

I must admit I hated living in a flat, I'm overly sensitive to noise that other people make when I'm in my own home. Thankfully, my EOT town house is next to a lovely couple that make hardly any noise. Even their little one, who's room is next to our bedroom, is not too bad.

** Insulting other members will not be tolerated **

If you want silence, move to a detached property where your neighbors are half a mile away like I did...

If you live in terraced or semi-detached you will here them. It's that simple.

That's the problem with living in flats, you're always going to have someone beneath or above. Obviously not being top floor is a bad situation, as any noise from above is much more likely to be heard.

Houses > flats.

There is reasonable and unreasonable though... and then there is "12 hours of cat fights" for people who think loud music at 2am on a regular basis is acceptable even after being asked not to.

If you want to move now you are liable for 6months rent plus costs to the landlord to remarket property so suck it up! You should do more research before committing

I bet the Bin men make more noise at 6:30 than car doors, just lol

People make noise!

You sound like the miserable old sod everyone hates to live near.

You seem to have a serious problem. You are probably the type of person OP is complaining about and who live in the flat below me. Completely oblivious to the fact they let the fire doors swing shut at any hour of the day whilst everyone else can manage to close them quietly.

This is what happens when you live in cheap housing, you hear things.

Complaining about house/car doors at 6.30 is just funny. That's not early. I use to rise at 3am...that's early. 6am is only early to lazy people.

TV/speakers - you're separated by a single layer brick wall, plasterboard and a thin layer of insulation (if you're lucky) you will hear these things. Same can be said for the noise of the stairs etc

This is not a flat, its a mid terrace stone built house - and 6.30am is early when you do 10pm-6am shifts because its not just car doors its house doors as well. People can close doors normally but some choose to be noisy on purpose.

Jeez its not a question about sucking it up as some of you say , and we are not sensitive to noise or anything like that but you just know when you have bad neighbours. I guess some of you who have never experienced it will ever understand, but I appreciate the comments by those who can actually relate ;)

Surely you have only just got home if you work till 6am? :p You cant have a go at people for going to work at 06:30 unless they are genuinely making more noise than they have to. I have to leave at 7am and sometimes am not home till half past midnight. I don't begrudge my neighbours starting their car to go to work at 7am after I have been working late though.

Loud music and unneeded noise at inconsiderate times of the day is out of order though.

If you finish at 6am you will only just be back or on your way back home??! so why would noise at 6:30 be a problem
