The SP mode gives you the best of both worlds - the added features etc you will get from connecting to thir servers every so often, and no griefing from other players, from what Braben has said, you can play it even tethered to a mobile phone.

I will definitely be playing solo mode if I buy the game - as with others on here I have no intention of having my game ruined by Wing Commander MumFeeler or Captain TwelveYearOld.

But this "always online"...do I fear it because it's new and I'm middle-aged ( ;) )?

It just seems to always be a "bad" thing when we hear about another game having it.

I am a bit worried about this being a case of "don't meet your childhood heroes". The original Elite was the first for things that are now commonplace - 3D, sandbox - and I was young enough for flying my own spaceship under my own command to be an awesome fantasy.

Ah, wait a mo. I still am and it still is!

Heh :)

It's the sort of game I should have been playing every week since the first one came out. I'm definitely not going to plump for the beta or any other "early play" options, but, as with Dragon Age: Inq, once the game is officially out and had its inevitable early patches, I'll be reading anything you guys write about it very carefully in the hope that you will all sway me towards buying it.

(Of course, I don't really place much stock in so-called "journalistic" reviews these days - it just seems that, in a massive increase in what was already a truth back in the eighties, corruption is rife!)

Depends on the reasons I suppose. If we are to believe what we are told, its to provide a better experience, and that makes sense to me, I quite like the idea of an organic economy and events being added to spice things up a little. Think Thargoids :)

Yep, onboard with all that. It's just that I live in a rural area - OK I now have fibre coming in at about 35 Megs so I normally do OK - but outages are not unheard of, plus there is always the "will I be able to play it when the servers finally go offline?" argument.

To be fair, on that one, I can already argue against myself! A ) I probably won't want to be playing the old game when that eventually happens, as I will have moved onto something new by then and B ) Frontier will probably make the information available for download at that point anyway.

It just feels wrong.

I'm old.

Shut up.

And get off my lawn!

True.

When it comes right down to it, whats the worst that can happen? You loose £40 on a game and have many happy hours playing it. £40 doesnt get you much these days...

I have been playing for a few weeks, and am hooked. Reluctant to put too much more tiome into it before Saturday though when they wipe all progress. Just trying to get used to combat, but insurance is cleaning me out!

Deep down, I know this to be the truth.

I think the wallet will be getting an airing soon...

I can't believe all the fuss over single / solo mode. It isn't that difficult to understand is it and those that want a way out / refund are being offered it are they not ?

Personally I will only play solo mode as for reasons stated, I don't want my game ruined by some 12 year old hoody youth.

The major question I have, is that after a few months, won't all of the planets / moons pretty much be found and claimed and so making there not a lot left to find ? For example, get a top range scientific planet scanner, 1.5m credits I heard and make loads of money discovering planets. These are added to the central database for all to see in solo / multi mode.

Surely after a while, the supply becomes exhausted. That is the only problem I see with the model unless I have got it wrong.

I think the main problem, and one I've shown above that I am guilty of myself, is not a lack of understanding around Solo Mode - it is simply the restriction of "always online" play.

Most of us "get" that we won't have to play with other humans if we don't want to, but we still resist the idea of the game requiring constant connection.

Plus, the way I've heard it so far, refunds seem very difficult to come by...

ah, ok, i think what FD didn't make clear was that the online was required only for the Galaxy update = small interaction. They should have made this clearer in their statements.

I am still wondering about my other concern of running out of planets to discover though unless I am missing something.

Either way, I am so excited to get my hands on the release. Will have 10 days of xbox controller before Chrimbo day and my Warthog.

Try docking in the original versions of the game! No lateral thrusters, no internet or Google no player guides...... I must have about 8 when I started playing this on my Atari ST and even though docking seemed almost impossible at first through hours and hours of practice and trail and error I finally got the hang of it. Even though I learnt how to dock manually getting a docking computer was a must.

I remember them days very well, still have frontier and an A1200 sat here.

You've hit the nail right on the head there - lack of clarity in their communication.

I'm sure it will all work out OK, and, as many others have said before me, the world is moving that way - there's not much point in resisting.

There are huge benefits to it that will hopefully outweigh any perceived cost :)

Ummm... there are over 400 billion star systems, I dont think they will run out any time soon....

Thanxs, new to the party and a lack of knowledge on this part from me :)

In multi player mode, I suppose it will mean having to travel further and further out. If you buy the game in 6 months, you will have to travel quite far outside the "know radius" to explore and discover

But if they they disable the galaxy chart buying in solo mode, this would make more sense. Update the galaxy for missions / wars etc, but only on the default "known" systems. Leave solo players to explore the hidden parts.

Thanks

The game has so much potential, over time, the newly discovered systems will get outposts, then space stations (if there is anything interesting there). I dont know if they will start putting new players starting further out or not, but that would make sense I suppose. Wormholes maybe? Who knows what we will discover / they throw out there :) I cant wait. Just need to be able to survive for a bit longer in battle, or I will never make it to Elite.... :D

How are you going to run out of planets.

Let us say I buy the game in 6 months, all of the nearby planets within a radius (growing day by day) will have been discovered giving a 6 month newbie hardly any chance to find any and therefore missing a large part of the experience.

In solo mode, this could be overcome by not having this downloaded and only downloading the default systems / wars / trading histories etc.

If they start to spawn multi players in different regions, this would help.

No idea until the game is released on how this would work.

You're thinking two-dimensionally. If you imagine there are say 100,000 players (a massive overestimate I expect) and 100 billion star systems. If half the players wanted to be explorers that means there are 2 million star systems for each player to discover. If each jumpable star system led to three others on average then there are a choice of 177147 star systems within 10 jumps, so that's about 20 minutes of playing time. I don't think it'll take very long at all to strike out into the galaxy with your fuel scoop and find star systems that nobody has been to...

I can't wait to try!

Ah, now you put it that way :)
