)?I am a bit worried about this being a case of "don't meet your childhood heroes". The original Elite was the first for things that are now commonplace - 3D, sandbox - and I was young enough for flying my own spaceship under my own command to be an awesome fantasy.
Ah, wait a mo. I still am and it still is!

I will definitely be playing solo mode if I buy the game - as with others on here I have no intention of having my game ruined by Wing Commander MumFeeler or Captain TwelveYearOld.
But this "always online"...do I fear it because it's new and I'm middle-aged ()?
It just seems to always be a "bad" thing when we hear about another game having it.

When it comes right down to it, whats the worst that can happen? You loose £40 on a game and have many happy hours playing it. £40 doesnt get you much these days...
I can't believe all the fuss over single / solo mode. It isn't that difficult to understand is it and those that want a way out / refund are being offered it are they not ?
I think the main problem, and one I've shown above that I am guilty of myself, is not a lack of understanding around Solo Mode - it is simply the restriction of "always online" play.
Most of us "get" that we won't have to play with other humans if we don't want to, but we still resist the idea of the game requiring constant connection.
Plus, the way I've heard it so far, refunds seem very difficult to come by...
Try docking in the original versions of the game! No lateral thrusters, no internet or Google no player guides...... I must have about 8 when I started playing this on my Atari ST and even though docking seemed almost impossible at first through hours and hours of practice and trail and error I finally got the hang of it. Even though I learnt how to dock manually getting a docking computer was a must.
ah, ok, i think what FD didn't make clear was that the online was required only for the Galaxy update = small interaction. They should have made this clearer in their statements.

Personally I will only play solo mode as for reasons stated, I don't want my game ruined by some 12 year old hoody youth.
The major question I have, is that after a few months, won't all of the planets / moons pretty much be found and claimed and so making there not a lot left to find ? For example, get a top range scientific planet scanner, 1.5m credits I heard and make loads of money discovering planets. These are added to the central database for all to see in solo / multi mode.
Surely after a while, the supply becomes exhausted. That is the only problem I see with the model unless I have got it wrong.
Ummm... there are over 400 billion star systems, I dont think they will run out any time soon....

I cant wait. Just need to be able to survive for a bit longer in battle, or I will never make it to Elite....
I am still wondering about my other concern of running out of planets to discover though unless I am missing something.

How are you going to run out of planets.
Let us say I buy the game in 6 months, all of the nearby planets within a radius (growing day by day) will have been discovered giving a 6 month newbie hardly any chance to find any and therefore missing a large part of the experience.
In solo mode, this could be overcome by not having this downloaded and only downloading the default systems / wars / trading histories etc.
If they start to spawn multi players in different regions, this would help.
No idea until the game is released on how this would work.
You're thinking two-dimensionally. If you imagine there are say 100,000 players (a massive overestimate I expect) and 100 billion star systems. If half the players wanted to be explorers that means there are 2 million star systems for each player to discover. If each jumpable star system led to three others on average then there are a choice of 177147 star systems within 10 jumps, so that's about 20 minutes of playing time. I don't think it'll take very long at all to strike out into the galaxy with your fuel scoop and find star systems that nobody has been to...
I can't wait to try!
