Driver's reactions to being undertaken

It's not "undertaking" if you're making progress at the prescribed speed limit or to the road conditions and the guy to your right is dawdling. Swinging left and passing at 85 is retarded though. Imo of course

The problem is people not reading the road and traffic conditions.

I often find myself in the outside lane in a que of traffic with gaps in the inside lane. Facts are I am going as quickly as the traffic in front of me. I would go quicker if i could along with the guy ahead and the guy ahead of him etc.

when somebody undertakes in these conditions it winds me up because we could all do it. I dont want to move over to the middle lane or inside lane to slow down and let others pass I would be going quicker if i could.

This is what I don't like; when the car in front of me is slow and I am waiting for him to move out of the way, and 9 times out of 10 they will usually realise this and move over; but before that happens some **** will zoom up the middle lane and try to cut in between me and the car in front just so he can get to work 30 seconds earlier.

I'll happily sit in lane 1 at my own pace and if anyone is moronic enough to be sat in lane 2/3 then I'm not going to go out of my way to go around them.

One of my last undertakes I got in front of a MLM and started weaving between lane 1 and 2 with my left indicator on to try and signal them to move over.

The **** pulled over to the hard shoulder and stopped as he thought something was wrong :D

To be fair, there was something wrong, just not with the vehicle. :p

I'm the same though, I use lane 1 until I need to pass a lorry / very slow car, then I'll move to lane 2 etc. I don't really bother with trying to 'teach' people to move to the empty lane 1 because they won't learn.
I did however pass someone on the left whilst doing under 70 myself and they then realised they should be in the left lane so indicated and pulled in behind me once I was safely passed.

Passing on the left isn't illegal provided you're passing and not overtaking, ie you're in lane 1 anyway trundling along at 70 and someone in lane 2 is at 60. As long as you're not constantly lane switching to try and get ahead/past people it doesn't matter. I've passed a few police cars on the left and passed cars on the left with police behind/in front and haven't been pulled for doing so.

I'm never really in a rush these days so am happy to sit at 70 in lane 1 until I need to pass someone going slower, which can infuriate people in lane 2. A while back I was going from Reading to Bristol on the M4 and there was quite a bit of traffic around Swindon area. Before the main traffic I'd spotted a couple of nice 80s BMWs rapidly approaching from behind in lane 3. We then got traffic as they were about to pass me, I kept in lane 1, them in lane 3. Without speeding, I didn't see them again until I came up to my junction for Bristol on the M4 when they came up/passed at speed in lane 3.
Sitting in lane 1, being sensible often avoids most of the annoying tailback stop/start traffic. :D
I also recall a while ago on the A30 back through Devon where I was using lane 1 happily and then saw a lorry ahead doing 40-50 and a queue of cars in lane 2 all wanting to overtake it. I sat in lane 1 and carried on approaching the lorry (with no intention of pulling out into the traffic queue) and someone in the queue blasted their horn at me, mouthed rude words etc. at me. I just shrugged it off, waited for a gap in the queue, indicated and moved out when safe.

I decide to undertake and just as I start coming up the inside the Mercedes decides to undertake as well. So me and the Mercedes are in the middle lane trying to undertake the insignia who decides to speed up and it ends up being a drag race.

Well, why didn't you move to the left hand lane to pass? Why were you not in the left hand lane anyway?
And why does it then become a race?

Note: Unless you see a big arrow above another car saying 'RIVAL', you are not in a race with them.

Not quite, not in the real world.

People are stupid - they cruise along, usually slowly, without lane discipline but when someone wishes to pass (be it on the left or right) these idiots put there foot down because they don't like you passing.

One thing that I come across a lot is someone crawling along in the right hand lane, they see you fast approaching, they don't pull over for a ages. Eventually when they do pull over and you begin to overtake, their speed dramatically increases to try and match yours (ie to not let you properly overtake). Say there doing 55 in a 70, they pull over, you accelerate to 70(ish) and they also accelerate to similar speed from the left lane...

It's annoying when it happens to you

I was driving on a 2 lane dual carriageway overtaking a row of cars, I was doing 70. A Jag from about 700 yards behind me starts flashing for me to move over, this was whilst I was busy overtaking of course. Due to the **** flashing me I obviously decided to stick to the outside lane doing 70 MPH for a bit longer, the tool tailgated me, then undertook me in a dangerous fashion.

Would have moved over in plenty of time if he hadn't flashed me in the first place.

Im all for going fast in the fast lane, but if im doing 70-80 and a car comes up behind me flashing to get past frankly they can **** off.
Theres pushing the speed, then there's just being a complete cretin.
but yeh if someone is doing minimum or less then they really should just move to a better lane.

and whilst were on it, drivers that beep their horn for you to move when you are at a junction and waiting for a car to actually turn after indicating (because its in the highway code and it avoids accidents) they can **** off to.

Theres pushing the speed, then there's just being a tit.

So much wrong here.

As has been said many times in this thread (and others), there is no such thing as a fast lane. There is lane 1 (where you should be) then n number of overtaking lanes.

yeh I know that, but whats the actual name for the lane by the barrier?
I am rarely in that lane if im not overtaking.

You shouldn't be in the outside lane unless you're overtaking, regardless of speed (heavy traffic notwithstanding). If there's room for you to move over, and someone is rapidly catching you then you should move out of the way.

Your example is different to rossk26 in that he was overtaking.

I didnt actually say what I was doing. As I have explained above I WAS overtaking. I didnt make reference to it in my OP as to me thats the only reason to be in that lane.
Next point......

So why suggest that your reason for not moving over was ;

Why bring speed into it? Either you're overtaking, in which case moving over isn't an option, or you're not - in which case you shouldn't be there
