Basically i'm not covered by the warranty for this issue as i'm not the original purchaser.

Ive got a Sapphire Vapor X 7970 Ghz edition 3gb, the fan furthest away from the rear ports will only come on if you turn up the fan speed up manually in Trixx to 80%, all other times its only the front fan that's nearest to the rear ports that's coming on, the back one stays dormant.

Ive tried virtually everything in Trixx but it will only work by manually turning the fan speed upto 80% then it kicks in like a jet engine, any suggestions ? If the rear fan was dead i'd probably be able to sort, its just strange that it will only come on when you set it manually to 80% speed so the fan itself is working.

I'm going to be getting a new card soon anyway but i'd like to get this one working properly if poss, i don't mind opening up as i'll change the thermo paste and pads while i'm at it.

I thought their would be at least one person that would have liked a challenge and to come up with a couple of suggestions to try lol

I'm thinking either a bios issue where the fans have been programmed wrong or something to do with one of the fan wires or the fan itself maybe, as i said the problem fan does work, its just it won't kick in till you raise the speed to 80% manually.

I don't know the best way forward, but I know what I'd do if it was me. I'd take the cooler off the card and see if the fans are identical and how they're wired. If possible, I'd swap the fans over to see if the problem stays with the fan or stayed with the position/cable.

Then I'd probably check eBay for cheap/broken cards of the same type hoping to find a spares/repairs bargain I could swap the fans/cooler from.

After giving up on eBay, I'd then buy an Accelero cooler (Xtreme or Hybrid depending on space in my PC), fit it to the card, revel in the silence, lower temperatures and admit I wish I'd done this in the first place rather than mess around with the stock cooler.

But that's just what I'd do! :D

I stripped the card down, you can't switch the fans around as the cable isn't long enough to put the front fan on the back, if you do that the fan connector that attaches both fans to the motherboard won't reach, they have mini connectors rather than standard ones.

I checked all the fan cables to see if one was loose, like a temp sender cable or PWM and they all appear to be ok. The only thing i can think of now is maybe the bios on the board is programmed wrong where the rear fan isn't kicking in when it should, if the fan was dead it would probably be straight forward, seeing as it works when you crank it upto 80% speed manually then its baffling. Sapphire aint helpful one bit, they won't even sell you a fan to test or tell you any possible causes or remedies.

Hey there,

You can get some new vapour-x fans from the auction site pretty cheap, if one fan is working, the other one might of just got a tired motor or something.

I Got some new fans for one of my 7950 vapour-x's as it started making a clicking noise plugged new fans in sorted and easy :)

I flashed the bios to other 7970 ones that work with the card i have, it's still the same where the rear fan won't kick in at low RPM's.

As i said previously, the rear fan will work but only if you turn it upto 80% fan speed manually via Trixx, it's got me baffled lol. Ive basically stripped the card down, checked all the connections of the fans, re-seated them various times just incase their was a bad contact and put in new TIP and Thermo pads.

This is more of a challenge now to try and get it going properly as i'll have a new card soon, i can ony put it down to a dodgy rear fan that for some reason won't kick in at low temps or low speed.

I need a boffin to come up with a possible answer :)
