Hi guys!

I've got a gigabit network connection on my motherboard and use a powerline connection (devolo 650+ triple set) to get a connection from my router (asus rt-ac68u).

I did have a cat5e setup previously, which apparently was giving me 1gbps but this wasn't really reflected on speed tests so I thought i'd move to cat6. I'm now getting 100mbps :D

Can anyone suggest why this might be? Cheers.

What sort of internet connection do you have, and where are you going for speedtests?

You must have a decent internet connection for 1gbps to be a factor.

1G over cat5e is perfectly fine, I wouldn't have expected cat6 to make any odds.

Did you make the cables yourself? if they are wired incorrectly it might be why you are only seeing 100mbps link speed.

Edit: I've just seen that you are using powerline. This is what is causing slow speedtests, it says 650mbits on the box but they rarely get anything like that. I have an 80mbit FTTC connection, and if I go through a set of powerline adaptors, even plugged in right next to each other, I get more like 50mbit.

152mb, virgin style.

speedtest.net. i do have a AC wireless adapter that was getting full speed while over wired i was only hitting 100mbps or thereabouts.

i didn't. bought them from maplin. i'm very good at making cables by the way. professional  haha

a related question: an orange led light on the network port is 100mpbs right? green gigabit? or is it the other way round?

riiight i see, so even with these decent powerline adapters, i won't be seeing full speeds?

Green for Gig, either dodgy cable or the NIC has not Auto Neg the speed correctly, try setting to 1000Mb/s if you have tested without homeplugs.

see this is what was confusing me, because the led was orange with the cat5 cables, but showing as 1gbps, whereas now it's green, but showing at 100mbps :D

if i force the speed to 1000mbps full duplex, it just says the cable is unplugged. i don't have a way of testing it without the homeplugs unfortunately. well, without hauling my pc downstairs :D

You're going to be limited to under 200Mbps, and probably not much over 100Mbps. If you want real Gigabit speeds you'll need Ethernet cables end-to-end.

http://www.devolo.com/en/Products/dLAN-650+/ this is what i use.

would you expect that performance considering what they're saying it can achieve?

i'm not saying you're a liar or anything, i'm just curious :D

i'm aware that wiring quality in the house and other factors can affect what you can realistically achieve.

You had me doubting my info there, had to get telescopic mirror and look on rear of VM SH2ac and Mobo's I/O, both are connectors are Green.

the solid light is green, but what i assume is the network activity light is actually orange. hmm!

The rates quoted for Powerline (and wireless) are PHY rates. With all of the overheads the actual throughput you'll see reported by the OS is a lot less.

Try reading some reviews http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/powerline-charts/view.

Powerline works better with radial circuits than rings. In the UK, sockets are almost exclusively on rings.

Powerline breaks if you try to run it through "surge protected" extensions.

Powerline doesn't work anywhere near as well if run via the consumer unit (separate rings, upstairs to downstairs etc). Even more so if you have RCBOs rather than just MCBs.

All in all, 650mbit would never happen, and much less is likely.

ah, i appreciate that completely, i think i'm just surprised that it couldn't push out that final 50mb/s to get full speed.

my main confusion really is why the cat6 cabling is only giving me 100mb/s now while the cat5 gave me 1gb/s :D

on the software that devolo supplies with the kit, it's suggesting i'm getting about 400mb/s throughput on both the plug downstairs next to the router and the one up here.

just confused and a bit disappointed i blindly spent 20 quid on cables that have just technically made it worse :D

Buy Belkin anti-snag Cat6 cables from the Big River place cheap as chips (choice of colours if it helps hide them or identifies them.)

Yes, but they wont help compared to the Cat5e cables anyway.

I'd return them if you can. £20 for a few Cat6 cables seems well over the odds as well.

i'll have a go. yeah, even maplin take the mick with prices sometimes.

ok, thanks for that guys.
