Justifying new technology

Lack of competition in the desktop/laptop space and physics is slowing down moores law, so that why things are less enticing there.

In the mobile space, although speed has been increasing pretty fast still, there hasn't been anything decent there to use it, so the updates have become less apparent to the end user.

Wearable tech still has no real new functionality.

Cars are evolving to be more "green", which is necessary, but not exciting.

The man-time required for cutting edge graphics in gaming has meant that there is less of a increase there.

So yeah, I guess things are becoming less exciting.

Need something newer, but just don't know what to get - they don't make cars like they used to! - nice and strong! New VWs / BMWs / Mercs compared to the older ones for example - I couldn't believe I could just push the wing in on one of them with very little force :(

You do realise that a car which easy crushing/crumple zones actually makes for a better car in the event of an accident, these areas that push inwards reduce the overall force to the instead of the cabin ie. where you will be sitting. And could result in lesser injury.

But is that a bad thing ( from a life perspective ) perhaps people might start to focus on the real world and their real life a bit more instead of been face stuck into a smart phone and missing your sons first steps .. etc..

I suppose im a bit biased here because im quite utilitarian i.e i only buy what i need but when i do i make sure its really decent and lasts. it costs more in the short term obviously.

You will find that with progression of time, this obsession with phones or wearable/mobile/small technology will get worse.

15 years ago, I'd be watching just 1 screen (ie. my TV or computer).
Right now, I am typing on 1 screen.
My TV is on.
And my email client is open on another screen.
That's 3 screens.

With time, we will have more devices, all being used simultaneously.

Wearable tech is going to be HUGE in the next 100 years and I predict that the phone (should we even call it a phone now?) will become merely a mobile computer (brick), while the wearable devices will be the controlling/output devices which are used to control the mobile computer.

Natural Language processing is going to be huge. We already see this in use with Siri and Cortana. And this will allow us to communicate with our devices without even having to look at the device. The ability to control computers using voice command will speed up the amount of commands we can send to the computer (no more trying to press/touch buttons/icons).

I've owned an ipad, ipad 2, ipad 3, ipad 4 and an ipad air

when I saw someone at work bring in an ipad air 2, I felt physically sick. That lunch time I went straight into town and bought one. My credit card was maxed out so I had to use my overdraft :(

I'm a techy through and through, but I only buy tech when there's a clear benefit to me in terms to filling a need. I listen to a number of tech podcasts and I'm increasingly finding that commentators really have to stretch to justify some of their purchases and come up with wacky reasons as to why they need X over Y.

Am I just becoming a Luddite as I get older, or is this just rampant consumerism that's getting out of control?

M.

Most products or kickstarters as it happens try to solve a problem that doesn't exist. However since there are a lot of numpties out there in the real World these products sell.

Take Logitech's statement that "Cherry Keys weren't designed for gaming" well will gamers be honestly be able to tell the difference between their Orion G Spark and normal Cherry keys? I think not!!!!

Buy what you need.

I've got a 2009 27" iMac that is still going strong, and when it no longer works or gets too slow I'll replace it with whatever the current version of the top of the line model is.

I desired the new 5K 'Retina' iMac but mind should rule heart when making big purchases.

Although ive heard this fantasy repeated many times by tech people and there is indeed a massive drive by corporations to sell you the latest shiny thing with age you tend to lose interest in tech, i never thought it would happen but it does, there is more to life.

The current trend is a smart watch ? Im mean really.. I want a classic & well made timepiece, I can hand it on to my grandchildren, a proper Mans watch not something to go collect from an ARGOS store queuing in line with the chavs on a rainy Saturday morning in dullsville.

Glow in the dark clothes like Tron ? They would eventually be so quickly outdated it would cost a fortune and you would look like a 1980's full tracksuit wearing Liverpudlian

4 screens ? I have two eyes.. and after 8k resolution it becomes so diminishing on even a TV that real gains become very tiny.. and yes within 5 years we will have 8k monitors and that is said to be the final resting place of monitor resolution as the eye cant see past that given the size.

The technology wont become MORE, it will become less noticeable but the SAME.

At some point you have to stop and wonder what your point is on earth, im sorry if it sounds philosophical but beyond a products core functionality there isnt anything more behind the screen.

But that’s just my OP and im sure there will be people who do want 50 screens and wearable tracksuits and plastic watches ...

what you are forgetting is that the companies excel at drip feeding technology

look at 3d

in your 8k example it will be

2020 - 8k tv
2021 - 8k tv with an extra 10,000 contrast ratio
2022 - another 10,000 contrast ratio and a bug fix for last years motion issues
2023 - another 10,000 contrast ratio and speech recognition
2024 - better speech recognition which actually works

etc etc etc

True these people are like the old traveling medicine men that sell you **** in a bottle.

I haven't forgot that its something I learned coming from being a pro consumer for a long time :p

somethings just don't actually get better there just packaged differently.. out side of that after some point in time if you have anything about yourself you do question not only the rationality of burning your life savings on the same thing over and over again but the reason your actually doing it anyway.

for me its just down to its core function, does it do what i need it to do and if so is it doing it to a high enough standard that doesn't get in the way of what i want to do.

I don't fawn or dribble over new things I sort of weigh up the odds and decide if i really need it.

deadly serious, to rub salt into the wounds, when i returned to work, my boss was there with his new iphone 6

back to town i went and spent another £700  i was already paying £55 a month and locked into my iphone 5s contract, so i now have a £700 iphone and paying £55 a month for the sim im using

I only got £200 trade in for my old phone, but at least I'm happy knowing that I still have the most up to date technology

I've no idea how I'm going to explain to my mum and dad, that the money they gave us to help pay for our new carpets was spent on the new 5k retina imac. Why do apple keep doing this to me!!!!!!! I'm in so much debt it's not funny. I've no idea how I'm going to pay for all this.

Does anyone know any good balance transfer credit cards I can use? I need to free up around £500 for when the apple watch comes out

What worries me more is that people seem unconcerned by their reliance on technology. When something is automated people no longer need to know how to do it themselves. This is fine until the automated version is unavailable... then what will they do ?
