Right my findings so far:

Mining - no where near as profitable as it was. Very low yields of gold/platinum/palladium even in a pristine cluster.

Trading - same old same old - done right you can make 750+ per ton per trip.

Bounty hunting - seems to have had a BIG credit boost. Have had a few 6k+ bounties paid out recently.

Got my viper with some decent weapons just going to play around with combat until the game goes live. Really c.b.a. to grind out better ships and get another wipe.

I love the idea of a big dangerous universe out there. My only worry is that a large proportion of current backers and beta testers seem to be old-school Elite enthusiasts, so there's a fair amount of goodwill, chivalry and derring-do. I've even heard of pirates talking first "Drop me some cargo" and shooting later. I wonder if the same atmosphere will persist when retail begins and all the griefers and script kiddies get in!

Having said that the universe is big enough that we'll easily be able to melt into the background and rarely see other players. And there's always Solo.
I think we'll see a mix of morality and methods; looking at the age poll and given the learning curve It'll be nothing like CoD or WoT. And like you say, the Galaxy is big enough that the possibility of pvp won't be behind every roid.

There isn't much PVP because primarily it's a PVE focus. Yes there's the option to PVP, but it's not really the aim and many don't take it favourably, especially if killing without reason.

At this point in time much of the faction and grouping isn't finalised and frankly just flying with a friend can be very hit and miss due to the instancing/islanding of the multiplayer. It's getting better, but isn't the experience you might imagine you'd get (for now).

Combat isn't really lucrative - ammunition and repair costs can rapidly eat into your profit, and thats before you've sunk several million into upgrades etc. The fact is for a while you need to be a space trucker in order to get your funding base sorted, then you can start considering more 'risky' pursuits. ;)
The website covers this quite well.
Its Elite, but Dangerous.
Why bother becoming a space trucker when you can just steal the cargo of someone who is. Without PVP, pirate gangs, mercs and player police corps the online game will become very stale.

Age poll? Would be interested to see that.

Watched a bit of the premiere event and Braben said you can start playing the tutorials from tomorrow, if you pre-ordered non beta.

There was a cool bit with 3 players using ingame comms and their voices sounded distorted, abit like the radio chatter between the Rebels in A New Hope. I dont know if the interference was just added for effect but it sounded very immersive :)

Someone in work mentioned that voice effect the other day. From what he said it sounded pretty cool, then I saw it in the capital ship demonstration on the stream - sounds like the bit you're referring to too. I'm pretty certain as long as it's not hugely restrictive I'll end up using it instead of resorting to vent/teamspeak. I haven't tried it myself yet but I need to or I might explode.
Begbie, pls call me. Pls.

It sounds great, really immersive - when it works... which currently is not very often unfortunately. Fully expect it to work by release though...

I'm hoping they're holding things back for the release. The problem with having such an open and long running testing/early access phase is that there tends to be nothing new come release and as a result the edge gets taken off the hype train considerably. If they just wipe and re-release the gamma but renamed as "release" it will be quite a disappointment and a missed trick IMO.

Braben has stated that the purpose of gamma is to get everything that is currently in place working properly and polished. So I have no doubt that the stuff that is currently wonky will be fixed. But it is likely we won't see anything else, except maybe some more ships? They stated 25 at launch so maybe... just maybe...

Let me get this straight, as someone who bought the pre order the merc edition I can start playing about with this tomorrow- I don't have to wait till the 14th December or whenever it comes out?

He said Wednesday, don't blame me if it's bs though :D I sure hope so, itching to play and having time to set up controls and get used to everything before hand is brilliant.

Thats the one, I was struggling to find it. :o

Good to see I wasn't the only one. Speaking of which, I can't be the only one that has the forum there set to German by default... I haven't been bothered to change it yet but it confused the hell out of me at first.

Yes, but only the training scenarios, you're not getting proper access to the game until the 16th, still it's a great opportunity to get controls set and a good feel for the mechanics of it, can't wait myself and I'm pretty bummed that I'm busy all day tomorrow, though I do have Thursday off :D

Having a hard take earning credits :(
In my eagle, sold disc scanner and have 4 cargo now.
Up to about 8000cr grinding.
Nothing seems to be available on the BB just the odd courier run for low credits, the say not enough trust?

It's interesting, I play a lot of DayZ as well, and I'm definitely not a pirate type on that. I tend to try and speak to people first.
Some of my best gaming experiences have come from simply talking to someone in DayZ instead of shooting them on sight, then spending the next hour or so with them exploring.

I'd love to experience similar in ED.

Fly to the nav beacons and you can get some decent bounties. I got up to 45k but have lost 25k in fines trying to haul illegal cargo :(

I think a lot of the groups still need to form and get organised. There was talk in the kickstarter about blockading and the like. Overall most things wont be possible until a larger number have the ability to interdict, track warps, and can sustain a bit more firepower.

I'd imagine also once you do some courier runs your reputation improves, but so far mines stayed at the starting point, maybe because I took a few of the 130k bounty contracts and then couldn't find the targets.
