Hi all,

Wife has been going on for years regarding an eternity ring (its not enough the 2 on her wedding ring finger are worth more than my cars(they are old cars)) but we're putting all our effort into getting out of the debt we have.

So, we've decided to make Christmas presents this year. I've some old oak skirting board in my garage, 1-2cm thick and nice grain.

Anyone any experience with fine work like this with such a hard wood?

I'm a carpentry noob, and I know that the skirting was a pain in the backside to work with as I've no proper sanding/cutting tools.

I've heard heat treating and oiling it should be done at the end.

I agree with macca - for the size piece you need, nip to your local timber merchants and I'll be amazed if they even charge you for an offcut that side. Something with a nice pronounced tiger pattern would look really good on that probably.

Your alternative is to find a mate with a lathe, you could make a load of those in a few minutes and pick your favourite :).

Thanks, its definitely oak, bought local and we know the guy just a pain to work with with hand tools (cheap crappy ones anyway).

Problem is, sander + drill press are not on my tool list, at least since my sander motor went :(

There is a 'mens shed' down the road from me so I'm going to pop down and see if they have the tools there, have a nosey about :) I'll then start experimenting, see how it goes :)

What, what, what??

Is this like a community workshop or something?

A shed for men :p Yes, its basically a place for men to hang out, usually older gents who may not have people in their lives. It's just a club for lonely people but all who are interested are welcome. They are popping up all over the place.

They all seem to do woodworking, shared tools and projects etc. Great idea really.

You could hand carve it if you've got the patience.

Shape it out with a sharp knife and drill then sand it smooth and polish it.

This is what I am thinking. Drill the center out with a 12mm bit which I have, it has to be 15mm in the middle.

the trim down the exterior with a hand saw and then try and get a carving knife (or stanley knife) and trim it by hand. Then sand it smooth and varnish it somehow, maybe so oil.

Tis a great idea indeed!! Wonder if there's anywhere near me where one could be setup...
