Hi guys, hull finally arrived into the 21st century and have had fibre installed (a modest 70mbs)

However, the wifi is terrible (wireless n 2.4ghz) using a netgear n600 dual band router (freebie) with getting around 15mbs download on speedtest sites.

I have tried powerline plugs to no avail (wiring is old).

So left with a couple of options

1) get an 5ghz adapter to see if that increases speed

2) upgrade to wireless ac to help improve speeds (expensive)

3) route an outdoor cat5 cable in place of an external tv aerial cable, being the cheaper option but how safe/reliable would this be? We're talking approx 15-20m

I have a 50m cable (doesn't need to be that long, I'm just waiting for the tools to arrive to cut it down and refit a terminal) and its perfect. I get my full speed from the router and its rock solid. I was using a 5ghz home hub 5 before and the performance was pants and patchy at the same time. This has been a revelation. Running cable outside shouldn't be and issue. Just make sure that you don't have it on a downhill slant as it comes it or out of the property or water will run down it and into your house.

Cat 5e is perfect up to 100m.

It will work in runs longer than that, but it's specced to 100m. You will have zero slow down and no measurable lag difference.

Today I had to bodge together multiple cables for a temporary link. It has 7 joins in it between the switch and the access point. Still gets full speed. Probably around 80 meters in total.

ahh thanks for the response guys, gives me some reassurance. I have taken the plunge and ordered the cable, so hopefully wont have any issues with the installation process :D think i will research some vids in the mean time.

any tips bledd?

I take it you've got a crimper and some RJ45 ends to make it?

When putting the end on, only leave 10mm of the coloured cables, so it crimps on nicely onto the outer sheath

568B is what you want. (the order of the cables in the connector)

Yeah I've ordered a crimper which has arrived today! And 568b more reliable then i take it? I have been watching a few vids so I am fairly confident of the task ahead :D
