Afternoon all,

My daughter is getting a laptop for Xmas which comes with Windows 8. I have other systems running on W7 and Vista, but have read/heard I should updated the 8 system to 8.1.

Is that right, how do I go about doing this? And is there any other shells I should install?

Ta!

If it's a new laptop it should have 8.1 loaded already, otherwise you can download 8.1 through the app store as ED209 has already pointed out.

And yes, if you can you really should update to Windows 8.1.

Run Windows updates
Reboot
Open the Store, it may prompt for 8.1 update (can't remember if this is only available through Store or not, it may should up on Windows Update anyway)

I'd do all of this before Christmas, it'll take a while to go through them all.

All done! All W8 updates, upgrade to W8.1 and those updates then installed Office and all those updates - from about 3pm to 1am!!

So glad i did it now rather than Xmas day!!

Yeah it's absolutely ridiculous how long it takes. MS really really needs to improve their patching process or at least make the thing run in the background without requiring me to push X or Y or click Z to continue. It's hopeless.
