It's the sort of thing that I can't find online but Fox will probably know the answer to ;)

What are the rough costs for comp extended warranty for any or all of 1,3,5,7,z4 series at <60k miles (excluding M models)?

Just curious :)

Just get a quote on the BMW warranty site - the cost will depend on the level of cover and the excess. For comprehensive with the lowest excess and emergency service they are something like:

3 Series: £600
5 Series: £900
7 Series: £1400ish?

Z4 is priced as per 3 Series. 1 Series is a bit cheaper than 3 Series. Knock off 80 quid for no Emergency Service. Knock off about £200 for £250 instead of £100 excess.

There is a about a 20% discount if its a renewal.

There are a lot of UK number plates for every make and model you could imagine in one place on the Internet...

I thought it might be bad form to potentially cause headaches for owners by putting random mileages onto BMW's database.

Just taken out the extended warranty on my 530. £82 per month with zero excess for the comprehensive warranty, went up to £89 with the emergency recovery added. The lowest price for fully comp was £49 per month with £250 excess and no recovery.

Ouch! At that kind of money I'd be seriously considering if it was worth paying £82/month!

It is a lot of money but so is any time the car goes back to the dealer for repair. Personally I would run one without the warranty, I have seen how the £££ stack up when the dealer is trying to fix something.

Would?

Indeed.

My dad's 5 GT has been at BMW for the last few weeks trying to repair the panoramic roof which jammed itself the other month. God knows what the cost would've been had it not been under warranty.

The guide rails, fabric and other bits don't come as a kit so have to be ordered separately and put together at the dealer.
They also had to replace the whole radio panel due to a wobbly knob (same issue in the E60 incidentally)

This is pretty much my view as well. It's not so much that they are inherently unreliable as they are not it's more than when something does go wrong it can be complicated and irritating to get fixed and often results in people throwing parts at it until it works. This is hugely frustrating and gets expensive fast when its your money. With a warranty its somebody else's problem how they want to go about fixing it.

Could you save money if you put £80 a month into a pot instead of spending it on a warranty? Quite possibly - but the peace of mind it gives having the product instead is to some people worth sufficient money to tip the balance in favour of buying it. I have absolutely no interest in running a car like this with the 'Will it go wrong and will they have any idea how to fix it' issue hanging over it.

As I just mentioned on the BMW thread an extended warranty pretty much mandatory as far as I am concerned. I know someone who had to fork out £3500 when the cylinder head blew on their 330d..... Ouch.

I can't understand why the 7 warranty costs so much more than the 5. These cars are all modular with common parts. Why on earth should the 7 be double that of the 5! I am being rhetorical, brand preservation is what i would think; BMW d not want the 7 to be a car for the masses so hike the prices accordingly! It's a shame - there are some superb three year old, low mileage 730d's out there richly specced for similar money as a 5.

It works though, the price kept me in a 5 :p

Lol Fox, indeed. It will almost certainly make me go for a 530d Touring MSport Auto I think. Warranty is much more palatable on one of those.

Don't forget there are a plethora of 520d's keeping the price of the '5' policy down. All of the 7s are 6, 8 or 12 cylinders with much greater levels of standard equipment. If you think a 330d cylinder head is expensive, try fixing the V12 in the 760..

That'll be the 520d with the engine that's significantly more likely to require expensive work than the bigger diesels, right?

There must be one V12 on cover for every 100 730d.
