Ordered an X52 on Saturday from this very emporium, so hopefully I can finally start to play this efficiently and get to grips with combat ... according to the site there's plenty in stock, but still haven't had a despatch email :(

Shame none of these more advanced controllers have thrust levers more suited to Elite where the mid-point of travel (with an obvious notch stop) is zero thrust, so then forwards from that point is forwards thrust, and backwards from that point in reverse thrust.

Far more intuitive IMHO.

The HOTAS X does...

The only time I've ever needed reverse thrust is when I (very rarely) overshoot a landing pad. Almost a waste of a button really!

For combat, boost forward, flight assist off and turn is much more effective.

I don't know if you outgun a ship coming straight at you then sticking it in reverse and just blasting has always been fairly effective. While not a skilful way of winning it deffo works in some of them training missions and can work in the wild as well.

CH Pro throttle has an analog thumb stick which 99.9% of owners use for thrusters, as it's proportional you have incredibly fine control over them this way.

Yes, that's why I wanted one. That said, a number of users told me it was difficult to fine control with it.

Anyway, the new flight model seems to have nerfed horizontal/lateral thrust so it's not nearly as useful :( I miss Beta 1.06s flight model.

Really? Myself and one other in the org have one and think it's perfect. I can land on any surface without scratching the paint on the bottom of the landing gear :)

Isn't Neil specifically talking about reverse thrust though, not lateral thrusters?

I like how the indents on the X52 throttle relate to the forward and reverse blue zones. It's fairly easy to throttle to zero once you get a feel for the stick.

Now you mention it I think he is. Must admit I've only recently started using thrust - forward only and a HOLD button for reverse. Even on the CH pro I was struggling to find the zero as there's no bite/notch on it.

the notch isn't 50% of the way is it? Not used an X52 since May when mine finally died completely but thought it was only about 25%-30% along.

I removed the detent from my X52 within minutes of plugging it in. It was sticky and made the throttle jump - a nightmare for IL2 take off!

In Elite I use FULL RANGE throttle (so all the way back is no throttle and all the way forward is, well POWERRR!). I have a toggle button near my thumb for reverse throttle. It just gives more precise control over your throttle settings and removes any doubt. I so rarely use reverse throttle it seems better to have it on a toggle. Plus the gradients on the throttle hub are accurate.

The detents on the X52Pro throttle are fine so long as you slack off the tension adjuster a decent amount. That said, I'd really like to be able to set a portion of the throttle range to reverse thrust rather than the 50/50 split we have available now.

Yeah I don't have a pro, and the detents were terrible from brand new, although I image they settle down with time. Even so, removing them is an easy and simple mod that for me at least was well worth the effort, especially for helicopter flight sims where torque and collective balance effect the throttle ratio's, thereby making 25 and 75% detents useless.

I've been messing about with assists off flight in the ice ring tutorial area and it's quite fun and not too difficult to negotiate obstacles. It would becoming a real handful in intense combat though, is there any advantage to using assists off?

Thankfully yaw is too slow to allow turreting, which would be really cheap. Im sure I read it gives you better top end speed for longer when boosting but Im not noticing it myself.

trying to use my old Microsoft sidewinder 2 on this game but it doesn't feel quite right.
Might have to bite the bullet and finally upgrade after like 15 years...sad day.
Game is amazing though...although I suck at it.
