AMD cards lost the free games?

Some of the arguing in here gets downright embarrassing at times.

I've owned more nvidia than ati and have had no problems with any card I've owned. Arguing amongst enthusiasts can be many things but can only be embarrassing if you're not an enthusiast :p

If price was a major factor in most peoples decision then AMD would be leading the discrete market.

Just like anything else, most people never just buy the cheapest thing to do the job.

Quite true at the enthusiast end of the market which is why amd need to sort out some more sweeteners for their current lineup to keep nvidia on their toes. The sooner the new stuff hits the shelf the better.

Fair shout and for those who are more stringent with purchasing, that is a valid reason.

The cheapest 290X is £240 and the cheapest 970 is £240 and a game, so really the 970 again looks the better deal. Throw in the feature set from each vendor as a reason and I love to admit it, nVidia again have this pretty well covered. Mantle is a nice feature and TrueAudio could be a good plus, so kudos for AMD on that. nVidia do have a big feature set (as I said earlier), so for me, nVidia win again.

Cheapest 290X is £209.99 at OcUK until 10am tomorrow (Black Friday deal).

Yeah I'm surprised more hasn't been made of AMD's terrible stock cooler, noise is one of the most important factors I look for in a graphics card it will affect you far more than minor differences in performance. If you run in quiet mode you'll probably experience throttling which will make 970 a much better option anyway.

A lot had been made about the stock cooler a long time ago, we have moved on.

What gets recommended changes every few month as price and included items change, I would wager since I joined this forum it went something like this...

6950(70)>7970>680>670>7970/7950>780>290>970>290>970...

Still, tomorrow it could change, this forum is generally quite good when it comes to giving a newbie advise on a purchase.

I must admit first and foremost, i didnt get my 290 from overclockers as it was £50 more for the same card last november, and £50 was enough for say my ram, and that was a big deal on a budget... but i bought mostly all of my pc off ocuk as i love the company, ;)
Anyways onto my point, I paid £310 for my reference, sapphire 290 a year ago, and i was looking at the 770, or the 780 and they were both a lot more expensive, and the 290 beat the 780 in about 90% of the games out at the time, and the only games it didnt beat it in, is games like batman, which are literally made for nvidia cards, bit s****y but what can you do i guess... so really, at the time 290 was THE ONLY option to get, and i wasnt fussed about getting games for free, as literally the 2 games i wanted were battlefield 4 and crysis 3 that they offered, and i could pick them up on ebay for about £5 each maximum at the time..
A few weeks ago, i was THINKING of selling my 290 and getting a 970/980 and i thought to myself, what on earth is the point, putting say £100 extra into a 970 and £200+ extra into a 980 just is a massive waste of money, just for say 10 fps more... my 290 is tank enough thank you very much, it can handle all i want to play, and if the 390 offers the same amount of beast the 290(x) did over the 970/980, then i may possibly upgrade to that if money permits...

Just read this thread, good to see the same old BS posted by the usual suspects once again....

Anyway, shame that although can't say that I am surprised tbh as it was stupid the amount of great valuable games that you could choose from.

I would have a hard time choosing the 290 over the 970 now, IMO the 970 is worth the extra £25 (factoring in the cost of selling UBI's game) for the DSR, better power efficiency & slightly better performance, however, there are 2 things that would keep me tied to AMD for now and that is:

mantle - games run amazingly well with mantle compared to DX on my rig so it has saved me from upgrading my CPU + mobo

freesync - in theory it should perform more or less the same as gsync, however, I think we are going to have a much much larger and cheaper selection of freesync monitors over gsync monitors

I am sure that AMD will have more free games come the 390/380 release though....

I suspect we'll see cheaper gsync monitors shortly, as it currently stands there isnt a big choice, the ROG swift at 2560x1440 is a bit of a premium spec product, though tbf the price has come down a bit since release. You can currently pick up a 24" 1080p gsync monitor in the AOC G2460PG 24" for £299.99. Not a bad price but personally id be put off by the res.

Most definitely! Once we get more than just 2-3 gsync monitors, I expect the price of the ROG swift to drop by at least another £100

IMO that AOC screen is a rip of, should be no more than £250 max

But still, I can't see there being as much choice as freesync monitors, I hope I am wrong though....

Saying that, I only want a g/free sync monitor with this spec:

21.9 AR
2560x1440
29-32"
VA or IPS panel
spot on for motion clarity
<£500

Love the way that it has been 290 is best card at the moment, with free game to make it best value ever.... yada yada yada.

And then all of a sudden, free games, what free games, 290 never needed free games to make it the best card/value ever.

This forum cracks me up sometimes.

( before the torrent of posts that are bound to be heading my way, This is not necessarily a serious post, just a ,mildly humorous observation. :) )

As someone currently saving up for a new GPU, who's been an AMD fan from the start..

I'm running an 8350BE which replaced my 965BE

And my current GPU is a HD7850, which replaced my 6870....

I'm buying Nvidea next payday.

Why? I don't care if the 970 is slightly more than the R9290, one, it comes with a free game, but more importantly, AMD can't make a good driver to save their life.

Add onto that that a lot of games seem more optimized at Nvidea cards, and that the 970 posts better results at 1080p (R9290 better at 1440p) and my monitor running at 1080p...

I see basically no reason to buy an R9290 X or no X...

And again, this is someone who last week very nearly bought the R9290 Tri-X.

That all makes sense and i am sure you wont be disappointed in the vast majority of games.
