I'm looking for 144hz with decent colours (decent for TN) which doesn't cost a fortune. But I read lots of reviews which seems to favourite BenQ to have the "best" colours out of competition. I mainly play FPS games like CS:GO, Quake, BF3 etc... I know this topic has been going on for some time now, but I haven't actually seen a thread including all these models.

The monitors I'm intrested in are (random order):

viewsonic vg2401mh
Asus VG248QE
AOC G2460FQ - From my research the more expensive model has this same panel and I don't really care about all the adjustments.
LG 24GM77 - Currently that caught my biggest attention
BenQ XL2430T

P.s. I don't mind spending nearly 300 on the monitor, the question is if its worth paying the premium over other brands?

Edit:

My GPU is 7950@1050/1400, for competitive gaming I use low settings anyway as without all the extra effects its easier to spot enemies.

I have the Lg, have nothing but praise for it.

from my knowledge but im not sure why 144hz has washed out colours. i cant say ive noticed that they are that washed out that much and the blacks seem black to me.

i can answer any questions you may have on this monitor. after much looking around and research myself there was nothing the benq's offered above the LG. but then again i was also advised to buy the AOC you listed as its supposed to be a superb no frills 144hz screen.

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago, i had the Benq xl2430t and LG 24gm77 monitors at the same time for a few days before sending the LG back and keeping the Benq.

Here is a thread i started while i had the LG.

what made you keep the Benq over the LG?

+1,

P.s. My friend is getting the AOC which is currently 158. I have to say that this monitor is very tempting for this price, but if the colours are washed out then not a big improvement over my current samsung 75hz.

AOC G2460FQ - Bought this today in the morning for 158, hopefully it will be delivered tomorrow.

I've got this benq monitor, bought it just a week ago, i have to say im strugling to find the right settings for gaming and just for internet browsing. There are times when colours in game appear bit washed out and the whites very bright. Still work in progress tho, every day fiddling with the settings to find my right image settings. If anyone has got any decent tips for gaming settings for fps and rpg would be great to see.

Hi there, I’ve got this monitor, had in a few weeks now and I am totally happy with it. I will share my settings from the MENU>GAME SETTINGS and MENU>PICTURE settings. These are the settings I have that I like.

Before I had this monitor I used a Philips 20“ IPS monitor for 8 years before buying the Benq XL2430T, so i'm used to good colours.

I will share my settings from the 3 custom presets (GAMER1, GAMER2 and GAMER3) that I have created. You may not like the way I have my settings, but here goes:

GAMER1 Profile (I use for general stuff like browsing, watching videos, photos and MS office. I don’t like the screen too bright when doing things like this):

BLUR REDUCTION > ON
DISPLAY MODE > FULL

MENU > GAME SETTINGS > BLUR REDUCTION > ON
>BLACK EQUALIZER > 0
> COLOR VIBRANCE > 9
> LOW BLUE LIGHT > 3
> INSTANT MODE > ON
> AUTO GAME MODE > OFF

MENU > PICTURE > PICTURE MODE > GAMER 1
> BRIGHTNESS > 9
> CONTRAST > 57
> SHARPNESS > 7
> GAMMA > GAMMA 5
> COLOR TEMPERATURE > USER DEFINE
> AMA > HIGH (Do not change this for any mode)
> SENSEYE DEMO > OFF

GAMER2 Profile (I use this profile for all gaming, screen a lot brighter with optimum setting for gaming. You can use this for videos as well if you want the screen brighter):

BLUR REDUCTION > ON
DISPLAY MODE > FULL

MENU > GAME SETTINGS > BLUR REDUCTION > ON
> BLACK EQUALIZER > 10
> COLOR VIBRANCE > 13
> LOW BLUE LIGHT > 0
> INSTANT MODE > ON
> AUTO GAME MODE > OFF

MENU > PICTURE > PICTURE MODE > GAMER 2
> BRIGHTNESS > 35
> CONTRAST > 50
> SHARPNESS > 7
> GAMMA > GAMMA 5
> COLOR TEMPERATURE > USER DEFINE
> AMA > HIGH (Do not change this for any mode)
> SENSEYE DEMO > OFF

GAMER3 Profile (I only use this if I am in a game where the scene is really dark and I really need help from the Black Equalizer):

BLUR REDUCTION > ON
DISPLAY MODE > FULL

MENU > GAME SETTINGS > BLUR REDUCTION > ON
>BLACK EQUALIZER > 15
> COLOR VIBRANCE > 10
>LOW BLUE LIGHT > 0
>INSTANT MODE > ON
>AUTO GAME MODE > OFF

MENU > PICTURE > PICTURE MODE > GAMER 3
> BRIGHTNESS > 100
> CONTRAST > 50
> SHARPNESS > 6
> GAMMA > GAMMA 3
> COLOR TEMPERATURE > USER DEFINE
> AMA > HIGH (Do not change this for any mode)
> SENSEYE DEMO > OFF

Hope this helps, remember this is how I like the monitor set up for me in my environment, you may not like these settings.

BTW you still haven't told us why? :p

I was going to post a long story regarding my research of the 24” 144hz monitor segment, and experiences in using the Benq XL2420Z, LG 24GM77 and Benq XL2430T, but I will give you a quick explanation.

Basically on the desktop when surfing the net, looking at photos or watching videos, the LG 24GM77 and Benq 2430T are on par with each other, the colours are as good as each other after making the necessary adjustments in the settings.

It is in game where I noticed the difference between these two monitors. While colour reproductions on the two monitors in-game are same, the Benq clearly handles fast motion better than the LG.

The screen on the Benq 2430T keeps up with the action much better. I noticed in some games, there was some screen tearing on the LG, where the Benq showed no tearing at all. I also had less eye fatigue when using the Benq.

The Benq’s ability to handle motion better was confirmed to me when I did a motion test with the two monitors using this website:

http://www.testufo.com/#test=framerates

This test showed a clear difference between the two monitors. On the Benq the UFO's appeared crisp and clear, where on the LG it was not as clear.

The Benq also has better customization options, for example, the black Equaliser option on the Benq is implemented a lot better. On the Benq, the Black equaliser really does just lighten just the blacks, where on the LG; you notice some of the lighter colours being lightened also.

Then there is the problem that I found with the menu system on the LG, please refer to the thread I posted earlier. On a lesser note the build quality of the Benq was also better. I'm not saying the LG is a bad monitor, it was just up against a very good monitor.

These are the main reasons why I sent the LG back. If there was nothing between these monitors, I would not have sent the less expensive one back.

Thinking of cancelling the monitor which is late with delivery 1 week and ordering BenQ somewhere else. :p It's a shame that no retailers really give you the chance of comparing some of the gaming monitors with test like that... ehh

True, I was lucky that I had the chance to have a play with the Benq XL2420Z for a whole day about a week before I purchased the LG. If I didn’t have that opportunity, I would not have thought anything about the screen tearing on the LG. While I had the LG, I was certain that the motion was not as smooth as the Benq XL2420Z that I had earlier experience with. It was then I made the decision to also purchase the Benq XL2430T so I had both monitors at the same time.

After I tried some games, and the UFO screen test, my suspicions where confirmed that the LG was not as smooth. If you have any questions about the differences between the Benq XL2420Z, Benq XL2430T and the LG 24GM77, just ask. Another monitor I was also interested in during my research period was the Viewsonic VG2401mh, but I just could not find out any info regarding that monitor. Finding info on that monitor was even harder than finding info on the LG.

Have you looked at the eizo foris 2421?
The colours are amazing compared to a tn panel and there is very little motion blur, the only game i see any is the dark areas in fallout new vegas.

I can't see the screen tearing that you're talking about, what games/settings were you using?
I'm playing BF4 in 60/120/144hz and I see no real difference from the Benq XL2720Z, which I had for a week before the LG.

:D

Sometimes we think something is better due to the sympathy for that brand/company and we don't want to accept something else being cheaper and doing this same job. I'm not saying its anyone from this thread, but just saying that this is a possibility as I'm a walking example of this. I use to be a big fanboy of steelseries products when I was younger, but after time I realised that the only good staff they make are mousemats. :D

I am loving my LG and found no screen tearing, motion blur is always fine with that test looks perfect to me!!

I also find it strange that no review site has released a review for the LG, but review the BenQ etc
Maybe its good bang for buck as they say
