Hey got myself in a silly situation. I stupidly forgot about my MOT so I'm overdue a month (cars fine though) however the earliest I can get a MOT is Tuesday and my tax runs out Monday.

So I know you can drive without a MOT to the test center to get it done but what about no tax? Since I cant get tax without a valid MOT, can I drive it to the MOT?

Any advice would be appreciated. I cant find the answer online but I guess most people aren't dumb enough to get into this situation :D.

Make sure you book into the MOT station in advance and ask that they record your registration number in case you are stopped on the way there or back.

The way back is irrelevant, the exemption does not cover return journeys or indeed anything other than directly to the test station.

I understand you are covered for the return journey home too when I read up on it a few months ago.

This.

A vehicle can travel to AND from a place of MOT without a valid tax disk, or alternatively to a garage where it might be undertaking repairs in order to pass an MOT.

I assume it has to be a listed garage rather than going to my mates house who normally does all my mechanics for me(well the real mechanic bits anyway)?

"Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test
You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle."

I live just round the corner from a police station. I see police cars all the time which surprises me as I hadn't been pulled over for expired mot .

My experience too. Drove round without an MOT for a couple of weeks inadvertently and never heard anything- despite the roads leading up to my house seemingly being an ANPR testbed, and Police hotspot...

Would suggest MOTs aren't tied into the ANPR system. Although tax flags up when expired unless running out of MOT doesn't automatically invalidate tax .
