Hi all

A friends ageing pc has thrown in the towel, no display output, the graphics card is confirmed dead after installing on my system, and i suspect the psu may be faulty too, although running, the led is not lit, it could have been the psu that killed the GPU and maybe has damaged other components too though i can't diagnose with my pc as its new hardware.

With all this in mind i think it best to buy a newer cpu mb ram and gpu rather than just a gpu and psu that may not work if other parts are damaged.

The old system: MSI K9A2 Platinum, AMD Phenomx4 9950 2.6ghz Black ed, 4gb DDR2 1066mhz Ram, HD4870 512mb GPU 600w igreen psu. 64bit Windows 7

New System (with Dedicated GPU): Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P £48.50
Amd R9 270 OC 2gb £130
Amd FX-4300 3.8ghz £60
4gb DDR3 1600mhz £38
CiT 550w PSU £23
Total £300

New System (with Cpu Graphics): Gigabyte GA-F2A78M FM2+ £39 (max 2gb shared ram)
Amd A10 7850k 12 Core 3.7ghz £124.5
8gb DDR3 2133mhz ram £70
Cit 550w PSU £23
Total £256.50

I appreciate non are going to play new games at high frame rates, but these systems must be capable of playing the games he played at equal or better fps, he plays at 1920x1080p, and my question is which system if any will surpass the performance of the old one, (I have seen a video of BF4 medium settings test with the 7850k and 16gb of 2133mhz ram at 1080p play totally acceptable fps 40-50fps)

Is the Max 2gb shared ram on the MB an issue or is this ok?

Your expert advice much appreciated. Thanks Paul.

Hi, are you averse to a **B Grade** GPU instead of the R9 270?

**B Grade** Gigabyte Radeon R9 280 WindForce 3X OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express G (GX-143-GI) £130

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-428-GI Shows 10+ in stock.

Will look at some other stuff in a minute.

I am getting all componants from one site at the same time to reduce postage costs Buying the 280 from here will incur additional shipping increasing cost so i am forced to stick with these componants which are best bang for buck. So opinions on only the proposed systems above will be much apreciated and help me a great deal thankyou for your advice though. Any swapping in/out parts to improve performance while staying within the budget most welcome.

Stay the hell away from CiT PSU. Your friend won't appreciate it when the CiT get overloaded and go pop, bang, smoke.

Get one of this instead when it is back in stock:

As for CPU and motherboard, got for this instead:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-531-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-276-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2811

And quite a lots of modern games would use more than 4GB system memory nowadays, so 8GB ram should be minimum.

ok point made yes i thought cit would be ok have to spend a bit more for a branded psu.

ok, fair enough, just saw your reply....from what i've seen and read, the Kaveri only does well with 16GB of fast Ram (2400MHz) and a top of the line Motherboard, £89-£90 etc.

Might want to see if they have an R7 265 though, it's a stonkin card for the price, would enable you to get more Ram with the difference. :)

Bezzy, must you get it from where you intend to get it all from?

Sure you can't get a better spec for the money here?

Ok im struggling for a decision lots of advice on various components I will set you a challenge for me that will help me a lot could you build me a system that will better the old system for not a penny over £300 exc delivery i honestly don't think it can be done on here. MB GPU CPU PSU. Thanks

I think the only realistic way of that would be to go for a 2nd hand graphic card...like a 2nd hand 7850 2GB/7950 3GB/GTX670 2GB for around £60-£80 may be, then there would be more budget on other things like MB, ram, CPU, PSU.

Total is £300 not including shipping.

You can overclock that Pentium on that board, if I were you I would do it. That GPU is much better than it looks, due to the new architecture of the chip, some people who bought the KFA2 version said it would play BF3 no problems in the medium preset, (surprised the hell out of me too!).

Compared to an FX-4300 with 4GB of Ram this offers way more grunt for the money.

Check for yourself, the Intel is pretty damm good for the money, yep it's not 4 core but most games are not 4 core yet, most seem to be 1 or 2 cores with 2 or 1 threads.....

Other people who have this chip say it's bloody good.

I went for that particular Ram due to it's Warranty and speed.

The PSU is the cheapest that I thought would last. Would have gone EVGA if any were in Stock.

I did look at an FX-6300 setup but overall, for what you want it for (cost and use wise), this would be better, especially overclocked, which is why I included a better HS+Fan.

What do you think ?
