I was hoping one of our OCUK detectives would put me out my misery and help ID the following roadside signs I've seen dotted around where I live. I guess my google skills are failing as I couldn't find anything. Mate of mine said they could be warning markers for high pressure fuel pipes buried underneath. I've never got the chance to get close to one so not sure if there is any wording to state their purpose. The picture is shamelessly taken from Google street view since I am not that sad to stop in a country lane and take photo of a sign ;)

Thanks in advance.

Gas is yellow, unless it's a different kind of gas.

What kind of facilities are there around? Anything petroleum / oil related?

Gas pipeline markers are yellow with black lines. Orange markers are for fuel/oil.

Search for Government Pipeline Storage System and you'll find lots of maps. They're regularly surveyed from the air, hence the markers.

There's an oil marker quite close to my parent's house on the Hamble-Aldermasten pipeline.

They are marker posts, I work in gas distribution and have gone up in the helicopter to survey using them. Well, once. I puked after two hours of tight turns and being banked on our side and they didn't invite me to go again :)

I've heard from a Utilities Engineer I work with that they help when you do a Helicopter survey of pipeline routes to check no unauthorized construction or other ground works is being done

Most of the time the spotter takes photos and logs it on a laptop, if they're doing something very dangerous (e.g. using large plant to excavate on top of a high pressure gas main, in my case) then they'll land and tell them to stop then and there.
