Howdy.
I am wondering if anyone on here knows about polos? or maybe just generic car things as my car knowledge is limited to Mx-5's!
My friends 2000 W reg 1.0 polo stopped running and the AA chappy said it was the spark plug leads, we sprayed the leads with hairspray as a temp fix and the car did at least run until he got home.
He knows nothing about cars and took the car to Kwik fit, which I face palmed at when he told me.
Anyway they said it needed new plug leads and the engine code G40 was thrown up showing its cam sensor was faulty. For this work they wanted £220 pounds!
I told him not to pay that as the leads are about £20 and the cam sensor is only a £25 part and both items take a few minutes to install.
I bought the items from my local parts place and have since fitted the leads. It did initially run a bit better but I noticed that the spark was arcing to the distributor at a few places around the new leads.
Can anyone answer me if this means the new leads are faulty? Or there is a bigger problem such as the dizzy need changing. The car runs really roughly and the warning lights flicker on.
I am guessing the spark is being wasted by arcing into the dizzy body hence why its running roughly, I just don't know why it is doing this?
I am feeling a bit stupid as I told him I could change the leads and fix the problem but it has not. This is his only car and we are both poor students so ideally would like to fix it ourselves.
Any help is appreciated.
Many thanks.
