Hey! A topic that isn't "I hit this" or "My engine broke" for a change.. :)

So we're getting colder now. I'm looking to grab some de-icer.

Just wondered if anyone had any steal deals or good places to buy it from?

I don't bother, just start the car a few minutes early and let it warm enough to wipe the ice away.
Heated windscreen for the win, so much joy pressing a button and wiping away the frost all within 1 minute while others are scraping away.

I dont even have to press a button for the screen! If its colder than 3 degrees, mine come on automatically

I don't bother with deicer.

I just start the car and leave it idle for 5-10 mins whilst I have my breakfast. If it's very icy, I'll pour cold water on the windscreen to speed up the process.

Get a big bottle/jug/glass and fill it with luke-warm tap water. Douse your windows, then get in and drive off. Leaving the car idling for 10 minutes isn't good practice.

My visibility is shot unless I leave mine idle.

No AC, so as soon as I jump in, it would instantly steam up unless the car is up to temp. I need full visibility for the first mile of my drive.

Half the time de-icer spray doesn't work up here. You know it's cold when the de-icer turns to slush or freezes on contact with the windscreen. Most of us round here leave the car running for a few minutes before getting the scrapers out. I miss my old Focus and it's heated windscreen/mirrors and washer jets.

Exactly what I've done for over 20 years without issue (despite people warning me it will crack my screen blah blah blah).

I actually thought you couldn't do that with warm water either. I thought anything above cold would crack.

Am I being trolled or can I actually try that?

The engine won't get up to operating temperature nearly as quickly as if you just drive it. Engine wear happens faster when it is below operating temperature.

It's best to get in, start the engine, then start driving (gently whilst it warms up).

Never knew that...

Assumed it was fine just idling and very slowly warming up

So do you all sit in your car whilst it's warming up or do you commit the offence of leaving a motor vehicle unattended with the engine running?
