Hi all,

For the second year running i have been booked to go to the Philippines for xmas, last year i ended up changing the destination due to the deviation caused by the typhoon.

12 months later and another is due this weekend.

Im due to fly a week today, what would you do? Would you still go??

Where are you flying into, Manila? Depending where the typhoon is going to hit you can get a flight out of Manila to anywhere in the PH as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand etc. I'd still go.

fly into manila, then down to puerto princess, looking to spend xmas around palawan etc

We went to Busuanga over Christmas last year and it was fine. Yes there was some damage but after talking with several people on the ground we decided to carry on there. It didn't affect our trip (although we weren't staying in hotels) and we injected much needed money into the local economy (we also took a significant amount of donations out with us). Where were you planning to go last year, if Palawan then there was no need to cancel your trip...

It's not like you are going to be able to get your money back for the flights so wait and see, if there is significant damage to Palawan then head somewhere else in the Philippines, internal flights are cheap and there are thousands of islands, most significantly less touristy than Puerto Princessa.

last year our plan was the same as this, we have no plan...... we aim to just travel around, i have 5 weeks in the country, so really had no plan apart from xmas around palawan

Do New Years eve in one of the resort/tourist areas. Fireworks on the beach (and 5 foot from you...) is definitely one of the best ways to celebrate it.

I only did two weeks, a week kayaking with the GF around Busuanga and a week on Bohol with her and her brother, who lived out there. Search for the Philippines in the photo and video forum for a thread on it if you're interested. There are so many interesting places over there (the far north, east and south as well) that a typhoon won't be able to cause a problem if you don't have a set plan.

I do love that style NYE, I've done that countless times in Thailand and loved it :D well I'm still going to go, i have no doubt. Its my other half that worries slightly about it. But it'll all be fine.

Ill demo check out that thread

What camera and lenses did you take with you?? i love the thread, can't comment though for some reason....

If you want to hire a few prostitutes...?

It's a horrible place! You see a few westerners unlike much of the Philippines but they are all middle/late aged men seemingly there for one reason...

Can do a horrendusly expensive trip to Pinatubo though (which we wanted to do but couldn't justify the cost). Admittedly we only stayed there for a couple of days (flying back from the airport) so maybe we somehow missed the "best" part?!

I have a D7000 and a few lenses, the 17-55 f/2.8 is the main one. Most of the photos in the first week were taken with a Nikon AW1 with the standard 11-27.5 lens. We attached them to the front of our kayaks so we could use them whenever we wanted. The waterproofness never failed and the usability was so much better than having to stop and get a camera out of a bag somewhere, or worrying about taking a plunge with it. They look like normal cameras too, to the point when in the second week we went snorkelling off Bohol and the boat pilot tried to stop us taking them in the water. Definitely recommended if you want a quality waterproof camera without the hassle of a large housing.

You have no choice because I doubt you have a flexible airline ticket so you are going unless you wish to give up the money paid for the flight?

Would his travel insurance not cover it if it not considered safe after the typhoon?

He's asking what we'd do - it hasn't happened yet, so he currently has absolutely no choice. I can't imagine his insurance would cover it either because it's not unsafe to visit an entire country simply because a typhoon happened.

Travel insurance almost certainly won't cover it full stop IME. If the actual flight was cancelled by the airline then he would be offered a refund (by the airline) or an alternative flight (again by the same airline), which could easily be several days either side of the date he wanted to fly as it's around christmas (again IME).

Also if the flight was cancelled and he took the refund or took an alternative flight a couple of days later and missed an internal flight/hotel stay/event then that would be out of his pocket as well, not covered by insurance...

Yes, i'm a little bitter, Qatar cancelled my flights to the Philippines last year and the above were the options/results. We managed to get them to fly us to another airport in the end (Angeles) and only lost a day. Luckily the filipino airlines are much more forgiving with refunds than European ones...

I swear to God you people are making these thread titles just to annoy me now.... two days in a row and that damn song.
