Hi guys.

I'm getting freaked out regarding checking into The Wellington Hotel next Friday. Now a few people have been to new york before and have had to provide a credit card upon check-in. Although myself nor my GF own a credit card (except a Luma with a very small £200 limit) and have emailed the hotel as the website states i need one too which they said a bank credit card will be okay. This still confuses me as i'm hoping they mean debit card? I have a Halifax Visa debit. Will this be okay?

Don't want to get so far from home and not be able to check in

Thanks guys.

I can't imagine why you'd travel to the US without a credit card - presumably you've done what, bought a huge pile of dollars off the high street or something? But that said they'll be fine with some sort of deposit if you dont have a credit card.

Just get one for next time, it makes life much easier and stops you getting conned and having to take a massive pile of cash around like you've just stepped out of 1973 or something :p

Actually you could just present that Luma card? It's only for deposit purposes, I always present a card when checking in and there is never anything actually charged to do it anyway provided you are not daft enough to pay $600 for something out of the minibar.

Not sure that would work with such a low credit limit, they normally take a fixed amount and place it on hold. Generally it will never appear on your credit card but it is removed from your available funds. It's likely to be greater than £200.

Yeah watch out for those mini nuts and small bottles of goddies.

Also don't order the p0rn channel, dont break anything in the room

You should be good

Not sure if your current Luma card would be worth risking, anything over £200 and you will be going over credit limits, and potential credit marks

Could it be worth giving them a call to see if they can raise the credit limit?

I've never paid for any of my hotels and I've stayed at a lot this year upfront. Usuallyits a pre authorization card to determine whether you have the funds. Usually a credit card on many websites also refers to a debit card.

Wow, thanks for your quick replies guys.

I have got the luma because i'm trying to improve my very bad credit rating so unfortunately this is the best i can offer. Well we're taking 3/4 of the spend on a prepaid card from Thomas Cook and the rest in cash. Will 100% remember this for next time, im shocked in myself i didnt ask or see if on the booking although i did use expedia not the hotel itself.

very stupid question but does the Luma need to have cash on it for them to check it? Reason i posted because im trying not to use the Debit card as i've read people who have done this a big chunk of money has been 'reserved' although i have nothing in there as its all spend!!

Cheers.

They'll 'auth' the deposit amount on the card, so you'll need at least the deposit amount free on the card or it'll most likely decline.

Some hotels only auth £1 to ensure it's an active card.

Yes, you will need money on the debit card for incidentals. The incidental fee is $10 per day when you use your card. However, if everything is fine upon check out you will be refunded the incidental fee. This usually takes up to 5 to 10 business days.

So they will only 'hold' $50 which is great news. Can sleep tonight :D
