Members of parliament paid their relatives and loved ones more than ££.7 last year an increase of more than 50% since the general election.

Whitehall watchdogs had demanded an end to practice of employing relatives on what were on occasion doubtful legitimate employment but the MP's objected and was dropped and not included in the so called tougher expenses regime yet the bill climbs ever higher. 103m quid buys a lot of duck houses.

Some of the jobs include. Researcher, junior/diary secretary, parliamentary assistant, office manager all of which can be done adequately from home which is great, saves on the commute.

Most of those working for MPs who are paid by allowances are part-time. Those will be absolute figures, not pro-rata. It's the pro-rata figures we need to see.

The vast majority won't be pretend jobs, the focus here should be simple spot check 25% every year to prove they are doing what they say.

There are many more stupid things going on with expenses, the simplest solution would be a large hike in MP's salaries and a dropping of expenses altogether. Then nobody can abuse them but would the public allow the pay rise which would make this possible?
 
I doubt they do any actual work for MPs it's just another scam to bring more taxpayers money into their already rich families

Perhaps if we didn't give MP's such pathetic salaries - they earn less money than many middle management in firms in London - we wouldn't need to have such a complex expenses regime to ensure that being an MP isn't something nobody can afford.

So MP's are like teachers then? As in they've judged themselves too important to do their own damn admin work! :D

Second point is spot on. Pay 'em well and give zero expenses. I'd like to see a broader representation of the people though, a shift from all the privately educated Eton lot. Would be nice if our MP make up actually represented the country. Probably lead to fairer policies if they knew how a lot of folk had to live.

What workload they enjoy phenomenal holidays and I question responsibility or at least their ability to accept it when things go wrong.

I suspect no matter how much you paid MP's they would still require a generous expenses and subsidies.
 
It really is stunning just how much of what we think we know comes almost entirely from the media. The media told us MP's do no work and laze about stealing everyones money and only vote the way they are told (and voting is all they do). So it obviously must be true.

If it's such an easy gravy train of hilarity why are none of you standing for election to join the fun? Free money right? No work? Why wouldn't you want to pull in £67k a year to do nothing?
