Hi I am currently making a new Micro ATX Gaming PC using a Bit Fenix Phenom case so should have the space and am debating between a GTX 970 or 980. I have a Corsair RM Series RM 550 80+'Gold 550W Power supply. I was wondering before I start to fully starting reading the comparisons between the cards. That I would check to see if my PSU can even power a GTX 980 if not the choice between the GTX 970 or 980 is a lot easier to make.

It should be fine. Get the 970 though, it consumes less power and is only 10% slower at worst.

I have been considering the 970 more but I've been considering making the move from 1080p gaming to 1440p and thought the 980 would give me a more reliable gaming experience. Just got the GPU to decide on I've got the rest now

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor
Gigabyte Z97M-D3H Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard
BitFenix Phenom MATX Cube Case - Nvidia Edition - White
Corsair RM Series RM 550 '80+ Gold' 550W Power Supply
Kingston HyperX 16GB 2 sets of (2x4GB) PC3-14900C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black/Red (HX18C9BRK2/8-OC)
1TB Seagate 7200rpm HDD

Will get a SSD bit further down the line so should end up with quite a powerful gaming PC.

if I was you I'd get one of those MB + CPU bundles - don't forget cashback too and better PSU - SF Leadex to be specific.

Err I already have everything built basically just need a graphics card to finish the system been getting bits and bobs over the last month or so. Guess you saying that the PSU I currently have is not powerful enough.

oh, ok. in that case you'll be ok. not the best choice, but certainly not worst. It has enough power for 980 system.

Fair enough now to decide either to get a 970 or a 980 imagine which ever I pick will still give me a pretty solid gaming experience with the rest of the rig I have got.
