nvidia gtx 970 or 980 upgrade from zotac 660ti

Looking to upgrade my zotac 660ti to a nvidia 970 or 980
the thing im struggling with is the big difference in price jump from the 970 to the 980 .
my main use is for flight simulators ie p3d also i would soon be upgrading to projectors .and the frame rates are critical .

Is the jump from 970 to 980 so big its worth the extra buck

im running i7 3770k 16gb ram ,240gb ssd

i quite like the hof series looks but power matters most

And how much of a difference will i notice from my zotax 660ti

peformance is what i need because the p3d flight sim is a frame rate killer
its just that jump in £££ , maybe sli two 970 in time would give me the peformance at a few extra bucks more than just one 980 ?

The flight sim needs more cpu than gpu but my current card is on 2gb and everyone in the p3d forums are saying its going to go 64bit soon and 4gb card is now needed as min .

I thought upgrading my card first which should increase my peformances and frame rates untill i upgrade cpu

Same PSU as me and ive just got a coilwhining 970 lol....

Tested the card on 4 PCs and it whined on all, so im pretty sure it wasnt the PSUs fault but the 750w is supposed to be a poopy PSU that causes coilwhine, would be nice to see if you get a whiner. Im sending mine back this week and getting a different one if they all whine then obv its a the PSU but i doubt they will ;)

what make of 970 you go with then ?

This is my dilemma what to go with
does the 980s suffer with coil whine then ?
 
I got the Evga SC, the next one ill try will be the Asus Strix or the Giga G1. I have a thread up already and it has some nice info in it, its called Coilwhine!!!!

Some people are getting no whine on the same PSU as ours, while others are getting whine even on premium PSUs like the Superflower gold+ ect.

I think its mostly down to the card tbh, as ive never had coilwhine before. Im gonna keep buying 970s until i get a whine free one. Would be nice if you could update this thread if you get a 970 to whether it whines or not.

Hopefully with all this kick up Nvidia will never release cards like this again!!
 
Get the 980 since you want one and will always have a nag at the back of your mind if you go for the 970. Just trying to keep you sane xD.

I just been reading your coil whine thread , and yeah i agree with you on it
its defo put me off these 970s .my psu is only a few months old so bugger buying another one ,
ive read a lot today on other sites about the 970 coil whines
think i gotta go with the 980 and hope for the best .
just that extra ££ is stopping me at mo .

If it's 1080p, your never going to notice the difference, the one I linked probably has the least chance to have coil whine too with the steps laid out in production at request of OcUK.

I think your right the 980 seems the better option after all this im reading .

I believe that P3d runs better on Nvidia hardware but has no SLi (or crossfire for that matter) profile.
Personally a 970 over the 980.
