In case anyone missed it, after many years of wrangling, a summary of the report into the CIA 'interrogation' program has been released.

BBC Guardian

It states that:

- the interrogation program was not effective in providing intel that could otherwise not have been obtained
- the methods used were far more brutal than previously believed
- the CIA misled the government about the value of the program and methods used

In particular, we now know that:

- Someone died by being held in freezing conditions - (it was later found out they were being held by mistake and weren't the terrorist it was thought they were)
- People were waterboarded (some people passed out during waterboarding and were waterboarded over 100 times)
- People were deprived of sleep for up to 180hours
- Someone was kept in a 56X76X76cm box for 29 hours
- Someone was kept in a coffin for 266 hours
- People were fed mushed food through their rectums as an intimidation method
- People were kept in pitch black, shackled to walls, with constant loud noise and no human contact for weeks
- Various other methods - drills to head, physical assault, mental assault etc
- A CIA head destroyed all video evidence of the interrogations

It's a sad day. Unbelievably, no one has been taken to court for these crimes against humanity. I mean someone died in custody and they were only their because of mistaken identity!! The UK was complicit too as we helped illegally render people to US sites where they were tortured.

The above is only the stuff we know about - given that all the video evidence was destroyed, we can assume that worse happened that we don't know about.

Does anyone still believe these programs were justified??

I can only agree with former POTUS GWB and congratulate the CIA and other agencies on their superb work during those difficult times. No measures are too extreme in the fight against Islam.

Is it really a sad day? The use of torture is reprehensible, but at least the USA has admitted it to the world - a day of shame for them for sure, but day one of the rebuilding process for its reputation hopefully.

I wish the people behind this - especially the politicians could be caught and sent to prison, but that's just not going to happen.

I agree that it's good in the sense that the summary was finally released. (The president and a lot of others were against its release but luckily it still happened).

I'm assuming sarcasm but you can't always be sure in these debates!

I'm more shocked at how naive the OP and many others are then this report, like did you think we all lived in the mushroom kingdom where nothing but good happens?

Also, do I care? Nope. CIA and other organisations like them will keep doing what they need to do be it legal or not. Would I care if it happened to me? Yes, but am not a terrorist, so nothing to fear!

Move on.

In that case you should be concerned because the torture proved to be pretty ineffective.

So is the EU going to impose sanctions on the USA for breaching international law or is that just for countries that try to free themselves from the western controlled world financial system?

Im surprised anyone is surprised. Do you really think the western world is better than that? We just like to pretend we are.

But it happened to people who weren't terrorists and one of them died, how is America better than the people they're against when they're killing and torturing innocents?

This is probably the most stupid comment I've ever seen on these forums.

I agree, I think police officers should be able to torture people they think are criminals in order to stop more crime. No need for due process or monitoring.

After all, law enforcement officers are never wrong and their judgement is always sound. They have never killed or or hurt innocent people. Who needs oversight and accountability.

History has also shown us that governments are always true and just. They never have any other agenda.

Nobody who has a clue is surprised. Anyone that pays attention will remember the Guantanamo bay guards they hung out to dry for abusing and torturing inmates several years ago. Despite the fact they'd be trained to do exactly that. One of the worst offenders was a woman I seem to remember. Pictures of inmates piled on top of each other bound and naked. Seen that before. Was called the Holocaust.

Im sensing sarcasm?

I'm sure theres even worse things going on than this but they've become rather adept at hiding it.

neither was the guy who died from the freezer treatment?

The entire point is that it wasn't needed as torture is generally seen as a massively ineffective way to get the truth and a timely process which usually means any information gained is out of date.

Some of the tactics are illegal but arguably acceptable but some equally aren't. I'm not surprised they tried to keep it from release.

Wasn't the mushed food up the arse for hunger strikers though not humiliation? which makes sense given the problem of feeding someone who can bite/cause damage to themselves or others with head and neck.
