Hey guys,

Getting the LG 34UM95 soon and I wonder if a single GTX 980 will be enough to push games on ultra between 50 - 60 (monitor is 60hz), I can't go sli because im using a mATX case and the GPUs will be stacked .. its either this or a Titan Z .. what are your thoughts?

It depends on the game and what level of AA you'd like to use. I'm using a GTX 970 and it copes with 3440 x 1440 quite well on many games. But I have to lower some settings and use 2xMFAA (4xMSAA equivalent) for that sort of frame rate.

Isnt 4x MSAA too much for 1440p? I mean some people say 2x AA is enough for 1440p .. what kind of settings you need to lower to get good frame rates?

The thing is my its either a 980 or a Titan Z, and from the looks of it (Titan Z is not being manufactured by EVGA anymore) a new dual GPU card might be around the corner

For the settings, again, it depends on the game. There is no universal rule - and on some you may well be able to play on the highest settings.

4x MSAA is still advantageous at 3440 x 1440 on a monitor of this size. In fact it is still advantageous on 27" models with a 3840 x 2160 resolution. The increased pixel density certainly reduces the need for anti-aliasing (or so much of it) but I have a keen eye and can notice and indeed prefer higher levels. The beauty of 2x MFAA is that the performance is somewhat similar to using 2x MSAA and the quality to 4x MSAA. At any rate, it's faster than 4x MSAA and looks nicer than 2x MSAA.

Thanks for the info! :)

Not scientific but I also game at this res with a GTX 970 OC'ed, and so far I have played FC3, Dishonored, Civ, Alien: Isolation, Divinity and a bunch of others running them all at max settings and with between 2x and 4x AA so I would say a 980 would be plenty.

Be aware though that Far Cry 4 runs like ****e on my PC and I have an LG 34UM95 and 2 980's SLI. It could be the poorly handled SLI bits from Nvidia or the shonky port from Ubisoft Kiev.
There are issues with shadows and uneven framerate. That's with a mix of Very High - Ultra settings and no AA.
So avoid that game until it's fixed.
