Best value gaming rig on a £1K budget?

In 2 months I'm going to have around £1,000 at my disposal and I want to buy my first gaming laptop with it.
The thing is I know next to nothing about computer hardware, what I should be looking at, why a certain brand of graphics card is better than another and so on.
So I thought it'd be better to ask people who do know rather than get the first one I see.

I would get a desktop but as I'm turning 18 it's natural to assume I'm going to be travelling around a lot more. Plus I don't want to be forced to share it with my family and rooted to one place. Especially as I've heard that there's a way to connect desktop graphics cards to your laptop when at home. (Or is that only Alienware?)
Building my own gaming rig is out of the question too, seeing how much I love gaming it's inevitable I will one day, but not right now.

I've had my eye on Alienware for years but I've heard that other brands are much better for a lesser price, Chillblast for example, despite Alienware being so hypnotisingly good-looking.
I do own a cooling pad and I'd want this laptop to be great for at least the next few years of games, until I can get a desktop.

The sort of games I'd want it to run smoothly on HQ with mods are Dragon Age: Inquisition, Skyrim, Portal, Assassin's Creed 5 and so on with the similar latest games.
I'm not going to be getting the most insanely demanding FPS games out there but I want a competent and consistent gaming laptop nonetheless, one that lasts.

Two have been recommended to me already but I have no way of knowing if they're the best I can be getting and so on. I'm being picky but considering that I'm going to be doing my life's work on this for the next few years, I want it to be as good a choice as possible. Can anybody vouch for them?

Competitor link removed.

So what are the best gaming laptops I should be looking at? And why?

Thanks!

Hi,

I have had to remove the competitor link as it is against the forum rules.

No promotion of OcUK's competitors
We, Overclockers UK (OcUK) are happy to provide the resources of these forums to responsible individuals without charge. They cost a substantial amount of money to maintain and use considerable amounts of bandwidth which is paid for exclusively by us. As you know OcUK are in the computer hardware business and therefore the promotion of OcUK's competitors is forbidden. Examples of promotion are :-
Posting links to competitors websites
Posting links to reviews that promote competitors
Quoting the names or contact details of competitors
Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors
Hinting about product availability at competitors and their pricing
Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors
Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in signatures
Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in profile
Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
Disguising attempts to do any of the above

Everyone will say you wont get the best gaming performance from a laptop which is true but if your moving round and travelling allot not much choice.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-174-MS&groupid=959&catid=1828 - this comes with a 128gb SSD which will boost load times when using the laptop and gaming + a bigger screen

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-038-GI&groupid=959&catid=1828 - this has a better GFX card with more video memory which is what a lot of next gen games need. i would recommend this one and get a SSD harddrive .

Hi AlassinSane,

Just to add to Keaneo's recommendation and if you can stretch budget a little, then have a look at this unit:

This one comes with the SSD installed and also has Wide Viewing Angle IPS screen:

Hope that helps.

PS - the other P35 unit can easily have SSD installed by yourself, so if budget is a real restriction at the time of purchase then you can add 1 or 2 x ssd at a later date. The Optical Drive is also Hotswapable so HDD or SSD can be installed here as well. (unit supplied with the caddy to install this)

my only advice to you is buy a laptop with the absolute best graphics card you can afford. processors are rarely a limiting factor when gaming on a laptop, any half decent I7 should be fine.
things like hard disks/SSDs and RAM can always be upgraded in time. graphics cards (generally) not.
also you will might find that the top of the range card of the previous series is better than all but the top of the range card of the new series.
For example when i got my laptop the 780mGTX was the top dog card, yet the 680mGTX was better than the 770, so worth checking out the specs of the cards on offer.

Agree with this view, and an example of this is here:

This was a genuine £1,799-£1,899 before 9 series launched.

Over budget for £1,000 spend,,but hey go on treat yaself ! Think of the saving !

Why recommend a £1500 machine with a previous generation gfx card in it? For that money you can get an MSI GT72 or Asus ROG 751 with a 980m in it! Seriously I'm actually quite angry that a rep would post a suggestion like that in a thread started by someone quite young and who is trying to make a sensible purchasing decision with what I'm sure to them is a large amount of money. Dont push your old stock on an unsuspecting public or expect to get called out on it.

HI Brok,

With respect the suggestion was made as this is a genuine high spec machine that was sold to OCUK to offer to customers looking for a bargain on previous generation products.

Sorry that this has caused offence.

It's not a bargain it's dead tech:mad:

The guy has a £1k budget. I understand maybe pushing an extra £100 quid if it gets you something considerably better (I did this), however mentioning a laptop for a huge £500 more is kinda stupid.
