So driving to work this morning and a lorry decides to change lane into the side of my car.

No major damage just a couple of scuffed panels.

Got his details etc but I have a couple of questions. He admitted liability "I didn't see you"

1) Do I still have to pay the excess on my policy or do their insurance cover it?
2) As it's only a couple of scuffed panels is it worth just taking it to chips away etc?

1. Nope not if you're dealing with their insurance which you should be.

2. You're entitled to a good quality repair!

Glad to hear you're okay.
Got to love the "Sorry i didn't see you" response.

This.

Use their insurance and get it sorted properly.

I hate to think how awkward it would be to deal with a foreign drivers insurance policy!

3 years of battling to get my mums car repaired after being run off the road by a foreign lorry driver. She had all his details and photos etc but it still dragged out!

Would it not be best in this situation to get your Insurance company to deal with it?

Or get a middle man involved.

You still should inform your insurance company that your vehicle has been involved in an incident, regardless of whether you intend to claim. If you provide all the details to them, then I imagine they can put pressure on the 3rd parties insurance company.

I hope she claimed backed 3 years worth of courtesy cars :D

FYI your insurance will go up too :(

Because he didn't swap insurance details with me it's a police matter now. Which means I need to to into the station and report an incident.

Considering the update about not getting insurance details, I would assume 'got his details' in the OP just means got his 'name' + reg number.

I would advise that you contact your own insurance company, informing them of the incident. Make it clear that (at this point) you only wish to pursue a claim if the costs will be covered by the other driver's insurance.

Your insurance company may then be able to track down who he is insured with, although it will be complicated by the fact he is a foreign driver.

Left hand drive artic at a guess, he wouldn't have seen you, it's highly likely you were in one of his many blind spots.

Good luck sorting the claim! Foreign HGV's are not the ideal insurance claim candidates!!

What country was he from out of interest?

Eh What? If a driver of a vehicle hit me and wouldn't submit their details I would be onto the police straight away to attend and get him to. Its in the best interest of the police as he could be driving without insurance in our country.

I got hit by a foreign artic lorry driver in 2007 on the m25 in my citroen saxo, very luck to drive away afterwards, after being pushed down the motorway side on before eventually spinning out.
Somehow I could still drive away afterwards!!
I had witnesses who stopped and police involved due to incident/location and my insurance Admiral done a great job of sorting it all out.

I wouldn't have thought it's particularly unusual to be unable to provide insurance details on the scene. Name and address is easy but not everyone carries their policy number around with them, and in the age of comparison websites I think you'd be surprised at the number of motorists who couldn't even tell you who their insurer is until they get home and dig out the documents.
