Hi all, currently got a 280x but im getting that upgrade itch(probably due to the time of year) is it worth upgrading or should i just stick for now. I game at 1080p and starting to get into the competitive side of BF4 gaming, will be getting GTA V when its out so ide want decent FPS in that aswel.

Cpu is a 8320 at stock atm as i had a few issues with my overclock and my psu is a 650w superflower

Dont want to spend more than 300 on a new gpu if i do upgrade but i will have my 280x to sell and a spare 7870 i have lying around which wont fetch much

Id recommend a GTX 970 or a 290 but with that PSU i would say get a 970 which will leave you with more room to overclock your cpu as it will need a overclock as it will start being the bottleneck in your system. A 290 will draw more power!

Though food for thought, if your main game is BF4 then mantle illiminates cpu overhead. So you dont need a fast cpu, a 290 may be better in this situation as you'll get more FPS in BF4 with a 290 and mantle vs a 970.

290 290x or 970 are all going to be worth it as i recently went from a 280x to a 290 and i was happy with the upgrade

competitive side of BF4 gaming :p no such thing.

but if you doing that you play low all mesh ultra and you card will do that fine.

seeing at you have a amd cpu id get a 290 of you upgrade its about 30 percent faster.

Cheers for the responses now its just a decision between the 290 and 970 i am considering going intel sometime next year so i could factor that into it all

IMO try to get over overclocking section of the forum and sort out your overclock first...otherwise you won't see much improvement comparing from your 280x.

Also going from the 280x to 970/290 is essentially a one tier upgrade only, with may be around 30-35% improvement...if it was me, I'd brave on on the 280x and keep saving, and then get an actual next gen card (not these 28nm one we got at the moment) for 60-70% boost over the 280x when they are out.

that'd be my view too. Get overclocking, it makes a fair difference. Then upgrade next gen. Easy!

I wouldn't upgrade, 280x is decent at 1080p. If you are interested in competitive gaming, you don't want to push the graphics settings to the max anyway. AMD should have something coming in a few months, I would wait for that.
