The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Im just back from watching it at IMAX waterloo.

I loved it; I let myself get carried away and didnt go in cynical/hating sentimental moments. It is not a heavyweight theatrical moment like LOTR but it was rammed full of really thrilling moments to enjoy.

I've been to see it today as well. The opening credits are fantastic. The bit that annoyed me was the lack of Beorn. He effectively won the battle in the book. He was in the film for around 5 seconds. Very poor ending imo. For me it took the shine off the film as Jackson had gone to far with his 'own' creation.

Pointless butchering of a classic book for cash, didn't enjoy the first two much despite loving the books, will wait for the tor......er blu ray.

Can't say I was impressed tbh, endless action sequences full of nameless characters getting slaughtered doesn't work for me. It'd be far better if they'd trimmed the fat from both this and the second film and made 1 decent film out of it.

So, watched it this morning... a good film, but far from great. The HFR experience is one I can't adjust too, as it makes everything seem fake, and kind of cheap looking... this is compounded by the heavy bloom and bleached grading, making it look like it was captured on domestic camcorders. The HFR does benefit the action sequences, as it gives a clarity to the fast motion that's lost at 24fps.

The leads all give good performances, esp Freeman and Armitage but a lot of the minor and extras roles suffered pretty poor acting at times.

For me this trilogy (that should have been one epic film or maybe two at a push) is far less successful than LOTR... too many silly changes from the book, and far too much substandard CGI make it a 6.5/10 for me.

And the Leggy moment in this film is cringe-worthy as always, but this is the worst of the lot.

Went to see this yesterday and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I loved the first two but this one seems to stray too far from the books. The start with Smaug felt rushed and somewhat of an anti-climax following the end of the second film. And the battle was probably too long.

As above, it would have been better as two films rather than a trilogy.

The HFR experience also make it look a bit fake where I had no real problem in the first two films.

Over all I've enjoyed the films for what they are but like the others there ends up being a couple of things which bothered me...

As mentioned previously the Smaug part felt a bit rushed and the lack of Beorn was very disappointing.

Also over the course of these films (and many others) they have manged to just make the endless hordes of enemies practically meaningless, huge orcs in plate armour and badass weapons are dispatched so easy by just about everyone, including fishermen and children...

Oh there's 100 mercenaries coming, no worries the 2 of us will handle this no probs.

Saw this yesterday and although I enjoyed it, I agree with the fact that the one army that "was bred for war" was so easily routed. Even the larger orcs and trolls were put down by the smallest of weapons.

Suddenly: Rams! Where the hell did they come from?!

The big worm things. I might have lost concentration at this point, but did any party actually deal with them? Or did they turn up, scare everyone and then leave without taking part in any battle? Like I said, I might easily have forgotten but I couldn't remember them getting involved.

I got the impression they were used purely to dig tunnels for the orcs to use... Was a bit of a disappointment.

I....I'm pretty distraught about that. As a huge Tolkien fan I wanted the film to end at one point. Perhaps it's best if Peter Jackson can't get the rights to any more of Tolkien's works :(
