Breaking News: Hostages taken in Sydney

The fact people are escaping makes you think there is a very low number of gunmen. I read on the Guardian website that political demands had been made but the authorities were not releasing any information.

I also read that a crowd had gathered to watch, sitting on the pavement edge with beers and wine. I guess when things like this don't normally happen in your country, the reaction is to treat it as entertainment.

I think the concern is that they don't know if it's just one person and they don't know if he has any explosive devices on him.

They will probably now this from escaped hostages. We don't it could be more etc.

However nearly all western police forces are about preserving everyone life, which imho put's hostages in more danger. Bit late breaching once he starts killing.

Where did you read that? I'd be astonished if anyone were treating this as entertainment.

There are pictures of people taking selfies and sitting drinking on twitter. Check this reporters twitter: @MarkDiStef

People gathering to watch is hardly a new phenomena. I doubt in their heads that they compare this to Breaking Bad or whatever, they are just want to see what happens.

Exactly. People just have a camera and the internet in their pocket these days. There's a documentary about 321 EOD squadron defusing bombs here in the early 70s and one of the operators was talking about how he got called to a device in Derry and a crowd gathered and started singing "Nice one Cyril" at him.

My feeling is this guy is a n00b, does he not watch the History channel? Hostage taking and demand making in Western countries hasn't exactly been successful in the past.

Precisely.. if it was that easy he'd already be dead

Doubt it. Even if they could somehow establish that he didn't have a bomb, they'd want him alive anyway, to find out who (if anyone) put him up to this, where he obtained the weapons, money and so on.

Hope the hostages get out safe, and the perpetrator spends the rest of his life getting passed around in the prison showers.
