Breaking News: Hostages taken in Sydney

Most of the hostages had already escaped by the time it went down. He might just have felt that time was running out and he had to do something before it did then opened fire.

If i had to put money on it I would have said someone tried to tackle the guy... he opens fire killing the hostage and police go in.. maybe a couple get hit in crossfire... Police take him out.

Sounds about right, maybe he had to tackle the gunman as he was about to execute everyone in the cafe, i wouldn't tackle a gunman unless he was about to do that as if i was going to die then i'd try my luck.

3am is textbook storming time. as said, if it was army commandos it was probably the SAS. I think if hed started shooting he would have got a lot more before police could get organised to storm. One dead is very sad but it could have been worse. All just speculation of course.

Latest from 2UE Radio on BBC News now is it was Royal Australian Regiment 2nd Commando who went in

bizarre, are commandos trained in this sort of thing? Thinking of british commandos I cant imagine they are particularly effective at cqb, at least in comparison to the sas?

No idea, just going on news reports:
The commandos who stormed the building were from the Royal Australian Regiment, BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner reports.

These days UKSF and SFSG, etc. get the full works in training, "killhouse" type scenarios are a pretty basic part of what they are trained to do.

Some sources are citing 4 RAR or 2 Commando as they are now known as being the assault team. TAG(E) - Tactical Assault Group East is mainly staffed by 2 Cdo guys. TAG(W) is the outfit which comprises mainly of SASR members. Since its Sydney, my money would be on 2 Cdo rather than SASR guys doing the breach and clear stuff. But then we'll probably never know, such is the shadowy world of these operators. ;)

Until the discovery channel documentary is released;)
