Breaking News: Hostages taken in Sydney

Some sources are citing 4 RAR or 2 Commando as they are now known as being the assault team. TAG(E) - Tactical Assault Group East is mainly staffed by 2 Cdo guys. TAG(W) is the outfit which comprises mainly of SASR members. Since its Sydney, my money would be on 2 Cdo rather than SASR guys doing the breach and clear stuff. But then we'll probably never know, such is the shadowy world of these operators. ;)

most news sources are citing regular police.

Only the BBC are running with the "Army Comandos" line which seems a bit odd since they cite the Royal Australian Regiment - a regular infantry regiment.

So the scum was a Iranian refugee\killer and child molester. All the boxes ticked for a islamist terrorist.

I can see new laws coming out in Australia now to combat this. Wonder which cafe in London is going to be next?

The Australian liberals are pushing for more relaxed immigration controls. The sight of people dieing attempting to make the crossing into Australia and being left for dead half way etc. have got them up in arms and saying its their social responsibility to house refugees in their hour of need.

Can't see that argument finding much sympathy now this has happened. Immigration is a hot topic in Australian politics at the moment, but in completely the opposite direction.

If anything it would be the tube again here though would it not. Bigger impact all round

RIP to the hostage, and hope all the others are OK.

I would like to have said im glad that the guy who caused all this is dead, but its an easy way out, atleast he wont be around, which he shouldnt have been in the first place! to do anymore damage, much rather him live the rest of the days rotting in a cell

I'm constantly surprised (not that I wish it to happen) that there hasn't been a Westgate style attack here. (Though the security services are probably somewhat to thank for that).

Pretty hard to get large amounts of assault weapons and amunition in the UK.

RIP Hostage.

If They (Terrorists) blew up the flyover over Staples corner the entire North Circular would be flummoxed.

Months and Months of SERIOUS problems costing millions

Wish I hadn't looked in the Daily Mail comments section on their article, although I can't say I'm surprised. Lots of armchair warriors spouting off about how the siege should have ended, and anyone who identifies him/herself as a Muslim gets a healthy dose of red arrows regardless of their comment.

That was one of my first thoughts... but the drug dealers around here don't seem to have a problem with it.

2 things

you reguarly see drug dealers with automatic weapons?

And while the guys getting these guys might sell to criminals they won't want to sell to terrorists because they know that will end with them getting ducked the police wouldn't stop till they found where the guns came from.

That brevik guy tried to get illegal automatic weapons but they wouldn't sell them to him so he ended up using legal ones

Without proper explosives and lots of training as well as understanding of the design of the structure bridges are damn hard to destroy.

Couple of times after drug raids around here they've subsequently found pretty significant weapon stashes. That is the other thing though even groups that have access to that kind of weaponry i.e. IRA are typically unlikely to sell to islamic extremists for any amount of money.

Dude was a complete nutjub (thanks captain obvious) that has a long history of bad stuff including violence. It seems he had got to a 'nothing to lose' point and was facing serious charges. 2 hostages dead :(

On the plus side, I'm blown away by the Aussie publics #illridewithyou response. Something that the UK public could learn from rather than the constant abuse and negativity toward Muslims that you read on here all the time. It's heartening to see that some people are still capable of compassion and measured response - Something to think about.

Very sad that innocent lives were lost. Something has forced the hand of the security forces or they'd have dug in for the duration/negotiation etc.

To do this in the name of religion is sickening.
