Anyone Have a Steam Drive?

till recently when my HDD died i used to have a Samsung 500GB drive when i had all my steam games installed too and then my main games on my SSD.

was great if i ever formatted my PC as i just pointed to the HDD to re instate them all.

the way i looked at it was if my games where single player only and no online gaming they all went on the HDD and if they where online gaming and map loading games it went on the SSD.

i would say any good HDD will be fine, if you want super quick loading etc then go for a SSD, mostprob about 500GB should be ok but depends on how big your library is.
 
If i were to get a steam drive, would I install steam on it or my main SSD?
Thinking about getting one, but not sure if I need an SSD, and what size i need.

I had the steam program installed to my SSD along with my online games like CSGO and then just added another library to steam through the settings screen and then it was all happy again. the HDD had all my single player games on and nothing that was used online.

the size you would need would depend on how many games you want to install and the size they take up.

my 500GB drive had 14 games installed on it and think it was about 100GB used. if you are going with a SSD i would get a 500GB drive but it depends on your budget really as it will cost a fair bit compared to a standard HDD when you can get a 1TB drive quite cheap or even a 2TB drive
 
Used some website that apparently can add up the capacity of my library. 900gb. Looks like an HDD it is. Does a SSHD really benefit all that much for games?
 
Will admit, did not know you could add libraries. Guess I'll keep steam on my main SSD for faster loading (the program itself)
 
you can add as many libraries as you want which is the great thing about steam.

can have your library on a 2TB external HDD and then take it with you to play them else where or a friends house etc under your account
 
I have an SSD for games (important popular ones) and a 2TB HDD for Games/Programs that aren't speed critical.
Not necessarily a "steam" drive as I have BF4 on it as well but you get the idea.

I had a 2TB HDD for my games as I like to chop and change and hate waiting to re-download, so tend to end up with most of them installed all the time. I ended up running low on space (Steam, Origin, Uplay and my son's accounts too...) but was too tight to buy a bigger drive - hence I am now running 2 x 2TB HDDs RAIDed to appear as a single 4TB drive.

If a game benefits from being on an SSD, then I use the SteamMover program to move the files to the SSD and create junction points. After I've stopped playing that game, use SteamMover again to move the files back to the HDD.

Works for Origin, Uplay and pretty much any other folder where none of the files are in use at the time of moving (a friend tried to use it on his C:\ProgramData folder - it didn't go well for him!).
 
How much would a steam drive benefit from a SSHD?

I'm already set with capacity, will get atleast 2TB. Maybe 2x1TB for RAID and faster loads.
 
An SSHD should place all the most frequently used files on the SSD part, so this would likely be the Steam client and some of the resources for the current game you're playing. In theory, anyway. I have no idea if this is actually what's happening, but I can say it works very well and Steam loads up in a snap.
 
If u play the same games a lot, then it would work really well, get the 7200 rpm full desktop sized sshd, I've seen them in action and they are very effective
 
I have all my games on a seperate 1tb drive. From what I read you don't really benefit from having them on an SSD except loading times. I haven't tried putting any games on my SSD but if I am wrong correct me.
