Steam to start region locking games

I think it's unfair how José in Brazil or Vladimir in Russia can buy the same game for 10% of the money I have to pay for it.

Maybe people wouldn't feel the need to do this if they standardized the prices a bit more fairly..

Although I haven't used a vpn to purchase games it seems rather unfair when some countries get the same content for much less. If it were just the exchange rates I wouldn't care but when we're effectively subsidising other countries purchases it feels unfair.

What if you are a dual-nationality citizen and/or spend time around the world during the year?

How will this affect Humble Bundle etc, if at all?

I haven't used VPNs for Steam but have done on uPlay and Origin in the past.

How would this affect people who buy games using a vpn? I thought that was the whole point, so they can buy a game that is region locked to Russia etc?

Will this not just mean there will be no worldwide region games, so every game from sites like G2A will have to be activated with a vpn?

It doesn't bother me personally, but I can see why it might. At the same time it's unfair to developers that people can buy everything for peanuts.

I'm sure Jose in Brazil and Vladimir in Russia think it's unfair that their wage is 10% of yours ;)

Ultimately the developers/publishers need to sell the game at a realistic price for the market. If the realistic price for the UK market equates to a month's average salary in another market, then it's not a realistic price for that market.

So they shouldn't sell them for peanuts in the first place.

It is all relative to the financial climate of each region as well as overall sales in the first place.

The West are wealthier than many other parts of the world and we consume much more of everything, therefore, prices here are higher.

Russia on the other hand, if you charged the equal of £30 there, sales would be considerably reduced.

Edit:
Haggisman as put it better than I could.

to be honest it doesn't bother be but as others have said they need to sell the games in the regions that are suited to match the wages and what things sell for

Have you ever stopped to think why its cheaper in those countries...

Can't blame them really, games are cheap enough if you're prepared to wait a short while to play them. They're only expensive if you buy immediately. 6 weeks later a £40 title is £10.

Well I think the people that use a VPN to activate games will continue to play it through a VPN for £10 a month or just pirate the game. I have never used a VPN to activate a game because I only do the dirty (pirate) on Ubisoft games after Splinter Cell Blacklist not working for me and customer support telling me to go shaft myself!

I think the bigger issue here is not just this, but the future. This is a very bad step in the direction of militant DRM.

That said, when games cost us say £30 and other countries with rubbish currencies pay exactly the same amount just in their own currency, it's frustrating as hell.

I'm looking at you Destiny.

This.

Bleurgh. If I want a new release, I pretty much always buy it at RU or BR prices on Steam Trades (in TF2 keys of course). We pay even more here in Euroland than you guys do in the UK.

Could be a good time for GOG to be launching Galaxy.

It's ridiculous that they charge what they think the country can afford.

just because your better off why should you pay more? makes no sense

there should be a standardised price in the EU enforced by the EU or you can't sell your game here :D

yea because we are essentially subsidising them with our purchases... disgusting.

Lets solve this by giving Steam sensitive financial data about ourselves and our household, so people who want a game and have loads of disposable income pay £1000 or more for their copy. ;)
